Is this possible? If so, how?
I am asking as I need to send some holiday videos to family and one is very hard of hearing, hence the subtitles.
Many thanks.

Many thanks. You can use the filter editor and the AVISYNTH function "Subtitle()".

Using the Subtitle() function is not good enough for the task.
A better way is to use VSfilter.dll's plugin "TextSub()" with .srt/ssa/sub files or SupTitle.dll with "SupTitle()" for .SUP subtitles.

Won't be simpler to set the subtitles as normal and just to force them to display on play (either as forced subs or as preselected ones)?

Yeah, it would! Bleedin' simple if I have actually thought about it :thanks: I guess I misunderstood -- I thought these were home videos.

I guess I misunderstood then. I know of no easy way to use Subtitle() function for 1200 subtitle lines for a full-length movie.

I guess I misunderstood then. I know of no easy way to use Subtitle() function for 1200 subtitle lines for a full-length movie. I don't think I'd do that either unless it was automated. I was thinking of subs like "Here's dad slicing the turkey" or "Yellowstone Park, July 11th, 2010".

Not only the studios have the right to use subtitles for their releases. :p. I do them too when I can.
I guess I misunderstood then.
The question was so formulated that you both thought of the best for the OP. It is however common that sometimes the OP wants something but s/he knows only a way of doing so, thus the misleading question.
I was thinking of subs like "Here's dad slicing the turkey" or "Yellowstone Park, July 11th, 2010".
Me too, maybe some additional comments or "real subtitles" (when nearby a noisy place).
