I have one WD 640GB 64MBcache drive and two Samsung 500gb 16MBcache hard drives and am going to get a Samsung 1T 32MBcache drive and was was wondering what would be the best way to set up these drives for encoding. Like which for work folders and output and which for the OS and movie files.
Actually only three for encoding and one for OS backup.
Thanks

Thanks I think I would use the fastest drive as the working folder drive, and the other two for storing the ripped source files.

I have installed a 1 TB WD Black, 7200RPM dual processor drive for my Windows 7 Pro OS. I use a 1 TB Seagate 7200RPM for my data. I have an WD enterprise 250GB, 7200RPM with XP Pro. All in my I7 920.
It is quite surprising the speed difference that I see, non scientific and no bench marks, that either WD black provides or Win 7, or both combined. Very noticeable. Seek time for this WD drive is awesome!
Though I still go back and forth between OS's, I find myself doing my backups mainly with WD Black/Win 7.

So the drive with the fastest sustained sequential transfers is the one I should use with the working folders? and the other for OS and ripped source files and last drive for the output files?

I have read that having a SSD for the OS and programs and a good 7200RPM drive for the data is the way to go. ( If you are running Win 7 that supports trim )
That said, I cannot justify spending $300 to $500, or more for the SSD just to improve the speed to do backups, since that's why we have night time/bed time! :p
( Which is why I spent $100 on a WD 1TB Black!)
I would think either your WD 640 or Samsung will be good for the OS, and if the WD is not a green drive or is 7200RPM, I would probably use that one.
As long as these other drives are SATA 2, data will transfer plenty fast between them.
