View Full Version : VidCoder: Creating custom profile

I would like to create a custom profile to rip my DVD's into MKV files.
I want the target size to be determined by the duration of the film.

For example: 30 minutes = 100MB
I think this would be done by setting the average bit rate.

Is there a guide to help calculate what bit rate to use?

Or is there a simple app that I can load an example video into and obtain the information to calculate a standard bit rate to use?

Sorry for the noob questions, but I'm not very experienced at video encoding.

OK, I found this app, Mediainfo, and it gives me all the info I need.

http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en

Now when I set the average bit rate, is that the overall bit rate?
Or am I completely wrong and need to set the frame rate?

I'm running a test to see if I'm close.
By my calculations, the DVD I'm converting now, should reach a target size of around 440MB.
I'll wait and see. If I'm right, maybe this post will help some other noob out.

Megui, Staxrip and HDC have a bitrate calulator they are all projects located in this forum. Other programs may as well all these are good programs.

Oh and regarding guide doom9 and doom9 forum are full of info! Guide to bitrate here http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/bitrate_guide.htm

Thanks for the info.
I've used HDC, and had trouble with errors.
After reading HDC's support thread here, I found the errors to be common.
So, I'm currently testing RipBot264 and VidCoder.
I like RB a lot for AVI to MKV conversion, but haven't figured out DVD to MKV, yet.
VidCoder is what I've been using for DVD to MKV, and it works pretty good.
I have MeGUI in my download manager, but haven't downloaded it yet.
I'll give Staxrip a try after MeGUI.

After a few test encodes, I think I've found my desired bit rate.
I'm getting good quality and small file sizes at 400kbps normal bit rate.
All other settings are default. And I'm using the 2-pass method with turbo 1st pass.
I'm very pleased with the results and intend to keep VidCoder as my DVD ripper.
I still prefer RipBot264 for AVI to MKV conversion.
