I'm using this guide (http://blog.newstrekker.com/archives/2010/04/07/23/) to convert an HD recording to MKV, and have come unstuck at the first step.

MeGUI is just not doing anything when running the HD stream extractor when I choose to extract as MKV for the video. (If I select H264, extraction is fast and successful.)

What am I doing wrong here? (I've left MeGUI running, exacting a 180Mb recording, overnight and it is still no written anything to the T1_Video -.mkv file.)

I do not have Bluray yet, however this is the type of stream the HD stream extractor is looking for. From my limited understanding of bluray if you had backed up your bluray with anydvd you would have a MPLS file and stream and it is these streams Megui is looking for.

I referred to bluray backup guide here http://www.recipester.org/Recipe:Rip_Blu-ray_to_MKV_files_19862345

have you got Haali Media Splitter (http://haali.su/mkv/) installed?

Excellent mate! I had already downloaded and installed Matroska_Pack_Full_v1.1.2, but downloading and installing the Haali Media Splitter did the job! Now the MKV video file is produced and pretty fast too...

Thanks!

always remember megui uses a lot of directshow filters to work... expecially for out of the box formats (like MP4 or MKV).
so if your system has no filters installed for those kind of formats, megui can get into trouble.
also, leave alone the codec packs. they're the source of so many problems...
just get ffdshow (latest tryouts) and haali media splitter.

Thanks for the advice. Do this apply to aspect ratios too? I am having problems with the aspect ratio of my video after processing with MeGUI...

AR could be stored in the container or in the bitstream or both. depending on the DS filters installed on your OS, one or the other may be enforced during playback.
my advice is still to use the latest ffdshow-tryouts, haali media splitter and MPC-HC as player. that combo usually works like a charme while WMP is a pathetic POC...
