DVD to BD

Hi!
I want to encode my "old" DVD's, burn them in BD 50 and play them in a blu-ray player (sony) with menus, etc. I use megui to encode the films and my question is ¿can i use the blu-ray profile (high profile, 4.1, nal - hrd, etc) or i need different settings for blu-ray compliance?

The blu-ray profile will work, but you would significantly reduce your workload if you use MultiAVCHD, which will take your DVD files as input (up to 252 of 'em I think!) and automatically create a fully working menu system and compliant disk.

I fully agree. The BD standard allows the use of DVD compliant streams into a BD structure, similar to the use of VCD streams into a DVD structure. Believe it or not, there still are VCDs on sale (current titles, ie 2010).

If one recodes the DVD there are additional issues to consider: BD is always 16:9 while the DVDs are not always 16:9, but 4:3 too. Then there's the PAR. And finally a slightly loss of quality, depending on your settings, experience and source.

You're getting into bigger problems, than simply copying them onto DVDRs.

Well, most of my DVD's are 16:9. Then, i understand that i can not encode in anamorhic for BD compliance (i understand that BD needs PAR=1:1)

I use normally these x264 settings for a 16:9 PAL DVD (720x576, no resizing) to BD5 transfer:

you can fit more than a DVD movie on a BD5/9/25/50 and be still compatible with BD players.

... and the quality of a DVD9 backup on a BD5 is superior to the quality of mpeg2 backup on DVD5.
