I think this is just an "s-curve" using RGB curves. You just raise the highlights, and bring down the shadows. If you want you can do individual channel adjustments. Google for "photoshop s-curve" or something like that
You could use RGB curves in vdub for example. (Same for photoshop, AE etc...). ; I'm not sure how to do non linear changes in avisynth alone
I posted an example here of your current source, and the curves graph
http://www.mediafire.com/?mwnm4md4ojt
The problem with the "after" example you first posted, is the effect is too strong - the blacks are crushed , there is posterization/banding, and you see less detail in the womans' hair - so be careful how far you adjust the curves

Another option might be to use GiCoCU and gimp curves, then you could possibly use it though avisynth
http://avisynth.org.ru/docs/english/externalfilters/gicocu.htm
The vdub plugin is called "gradation curves" and you put it in the virtualdub plugins folder (or plugins32 folder) . There are tutorials on the author's website

The same way you install any other vdub plugin.

Apply the filter in the usual way, choose a compression, and then save AVI.

in gimp, in the curves menu, push the triangle button (it looks like it's pointing left, it's right beside the "+" button) . I think you have to save using old curves file format (checkmark the box)
did you abandon the vdub method?

@Back4mHell
You have to answer the questions we ask you! Please answer this one:
"did you abandon the vdub method?"
If so, why?

What about quality ? it got worst :( You need to explain what you did. We are not mind readers.
Did you save to an AVI? If so what compression and bitrate did you use? What do you mean by "worse quality".
To be honest I am losing patience with this thread.
