what is win2008 server lacking?

Vegas seem to have an internal error

A server is a server and has to remain a server.

User software should be installed only on workstations.

Servers lack most of the media DLLs required by most software ...

Did you install the "Desktop Experience" role? It will enable Aero, Media Player etc.. you may need to manually install some things like DirectX / Visual C rutimes etc... but it SHOULD work. Plenty of folks out there run Server 2k8 on a workstation.
