View Full Version : Bluray ---> MKV

I've now read so many different forums with different suggestions, and have tried at least 15 different methods of taking a Bluray and getting it into an MKV container that my head hurts and its all one big blur. I know that there isn't a definitive answer to this but I'd like possibility some updated suggestions how to accomplish this. The reason I've tried so many is that some the sound and the video don't sync up as well, a few methods didn't allow for chapter markers, others seemed out of date, and some just simply didn't seem to work (possibly due to being out of date).
I'm using AnyDVD HD to make an ISO of my Bluray.
I'd like to take the following and get a high-quality mkv file.
DTS audio
Chapter markers
Subtitles
That's all, sounds easy - right?

I'm just wondering, do you really need chapters?

I've never used it, but makeMKV (http://www.makemkv.com/) probably is what you need.

Yes, MakeMKV will do this, including copying chapter markers (albeit without names, just times). You will of course be unable to view the PGS subtitles copied from the Blu-ray with most software when they are placed in an MKV container, so my suggestion there is to demux them with eac3to and OCR them with SupRip or SUPread to an SRT file.

@paxton
Hi!
Just a bit of additional information, in support of the suggestion by both "deank" and "Inspector.Gadget" to use MakeMKV:
MakeMKV will, with "one click" and NO additional programs needed, both "rip" your original BluRay disc directly and create an .MKV.
There is no need to use AnyDVDHD or DVDFab Passkey and no need to create an .ISO image file.(Actually, if you have either of these programs installed, you should make certain to have them "turned completely off" when using MakeMKV)

I like having the chapter markers because most of the time I don't finish watching a movie in a day, I like being able to move quickly through the chapters to find my last spot.
With regards to MakeMKV, that was one of the programs I tried and found the sound to be off by about half a second. Seems like a good program though. Could it have been something I did, or is this just a rare occurance that happened my first time around?

Really?! I can't believe you took the time to type that out. Please let me know if you have any ideas that can accomplish what it was I'm looking todo, the reason for my post.
Thanks.

Play will resume from the last spot. I responded to this:

I offered you a way to find your last spot.
If you don't like my posts then don't read them. Also see rule 12 paragraph 1, second sentence.

Could it have been something I did, or is this just a rare occurance that happened my first time around?I can only tell you that I've processed well over 200 of my BluRay discs with MakeMKV and only once ("The Gladiator", using the then-existing version of MakeMKV, now about 6 versions in the past) ddi it yield an out of synch result. I really do appreciate you trying to help, but I didn't ask for a way to find my last spot, I asked how to incorporate chapter markers.

I thought it might have just been bad luck on my part, trying out my first movie. I'm giving it another go as I type.
I'll let you know how it goes.

I finished with Spider-Man 2 with MakeMKV. The audio seems to be perfect but at times it looks like the picture is blurry, almost like I can see verticle bars that are distorting the picture.

I don't know exactly what the difference is but the movie plays great via my PCH, I only get the strange blurring effect when I play it via XBMC on my laptop running an HDMI to my TV.
All is good seeing that they play fine via my PCH. Anyone care to comment why I'd get a blurring effect via XBMC and my laptop?

XBMC is probably generating tearing. What are the specs of your laptop? Do you still see the problem using the latest rev of MPC-HC with the internal H.264 decoder and the EVR-CP renderer?

I second MakeMKV. I have never had an out of sync movie come from it. I always update to the latest version too.
DvdFabHD will also do the same thing too. So far its still free with DVDfab.

Nope. If you go Bluray to mobile and pick .MKV you can chose remux or MKVh.264. If you click edit profile you have two options remux or MKVh.264.
I have done many blu-ray disc's to test against MakeMKV.

To avoid confusion - DVDFabHD is the freeware version of DVDFab. As such, unless something has changed, after 21 or 30 days, the ONLY function of DVDFabHD if DVD ripping.
Are you saying this has changed, or are you referring to the payware DVDFab?
And since you mention "Mobile", does this function generate 1920x1080 video?

Ya this is the free version. It says that you have 30 days to use it, but I haven't got blocked from using it in the free version. From what I see MakeMKV is supposed to have a 30 day period, but it isnt really enforced for some reason.
Im going to throw in a Blu-ray and post up the media info on it. give me like an hour.

Within that 30-day period, though, you have access to at least some of the non-free DVDFab features. Anyone out of the trial period care to test MKV remuxing?

Then it's even more confusing
see the images (never expire)
http://www.dvdfab.com/images/hd-decrypter-01-l.jpg
and the text
DVDFab HD Decrypter
DVDFab HD Decrypter is a simple version of DVDFab "DVD to DVD" and DVDFab "Blu-ray to Blu-ray".
Features Highlight
1. Copies entire DVD/Blu-ray movie to hard drive.
2. Removes all the DVD protections (CSS, RC, RCE, APS, UOPs and Sony ARccOS) and part of Blu-ray protections (AACS, BD+, RC, UOPS and BD-Live) while copying.
I am really serious, I intend to install such a software but I don't like trial (or similar) versions, either freeware or (decent) payware. Are you really sure that never expire would prevent DVDFab HD Decrypter (this link -> http://www.dvdfab.com/en/hd-decrypter.htm) from ripping BluRays after 30 days?

I read here about makemkv being payware after beta and I can not wonder why meGUI wasn't mentioned. It's freeware, it has a good update database, you can choose one of the many x264 presets and just click start. Ofc all the presets are configurable and you can do whatever you want with your movies.

Just a note, [spam] is notorious for distributing broken, trojan'd, or fake (e.g., "Gold Wave" instead of Goldwave audio editing software). Moreover, most of the shareware encoding apps floating around are mere ffmpeg ripoffs.

DVDFab has 2 main products: a decrypter as a driver -- Passkey -- which is currently free in Beta form; & their DVDFab app that combines a decrypter with all sorts of conversion options. There hasn't been any difference between DVDFab & the free, so-called DVDFab HD Decrypter for quite a while -- you can read more about it on the DVDFab tool pages at videohelp.com, but in a nutshell, DVDFab does everything for 30 days, & after that you either buy a subscription or you can only use the copy to hdd feature, with the restriction that the newest titles may not work... The developer added the last restriction because cracks & sales of counterfeit versions are common. FWIW I *think* I read somewhere of AnyDVD/DVDFab conflicts.
I own several computers, so they are quite specialised (inet, audio&music, video&dvd etc.). On those I don't have antivira nor firewalls, anything at all. I don't need them. But installing a single software that would kill my system is not an option, because I have to go again through all the reinstall & certifications & stuff.
So the actual question was if DVD Fab HD decrypter is safe enough to be installed on a computer without antivira&co and no internet (updates, keys etc.)?

@Ghitulescu & Inspector.Gadget
Ya I don't know. I have been using DVDfab for a while with dvds then went to BD a couple of months ago. I have never bought a key or put a pirated version on my server. All I do is delete and update when a new version comes out.
Quality wise I can't tell the difference between the same movie ripped with both apps.

setarip_old, I believe I share your understanding of the limits of functionality of the integrated DVDFab HD Decrypter (free, indefinite license) component of the DVDFab software (initially a 30-day trial unless license is purchased), as distinct from the DVDFab Passkey standalone software. So far as I know, the "Blu-ray remux to MKV" function is solely a feature available under the 30-day trial period of all DVDFab features or once you've purchased a license.
Is this correct, or has DVDFab HD Decrypter been updated to do "Blu-ray remux to MKV" even outside the trial period allowing access to other DVDFab features?

To the OP.
You have two options for simple fast use.
MakeMKV and DVDfabHD. Right now you don't have to pay, later you might. Thats all up to you.
If with both you still have audio sync issues I would start looking into other possible causes instead of the software because people have been using these programs for a while and have pretty good success.

@paxton:
Since you already use AnyDVD and have your blu-ray ripped you can use eac3to and mkvmerge.
1) eac3to bluray_disc_folder output.mkv
2) Start mkvmerge GUI and drop the video and audio files
3) "Chapter editor" / Load... / browse for the chapter file extracted from eac3to.
Depending on the version of mkvmerge you may be able to mux the SUP subtitles, too.
I don't see the reason for 20 posts from other users and not mentioning this simple method.
