Hi,
I want to split a large AVI file (3GB in mp4 format) into smaller chunks of size 500MB. To do so, I use this command:
mp4box -splits 500000 video.avi
but mp4box just prints the number of video tracks and terminates without splitting the video. But what is the problem?!

Are you sure mp4box supports AVIs?

oh, yeap, I just found that MP4Box doesn't support AVI container. But is there any other command line program to do so? (split a large AVI file into smaller chunks) Thanks,

Try AVI-Mux GUI or VirtualDub.

You could use AVISynth, with the 'Trim' function (to define and select each range of video), and then 'segmentedavisource' to rejoin these segments if you wanted.

You can use VirtualDub to split AVI file. To split by size in VirtualDub, just specify the size of segments. E.g. if you had a 1GB file and you split by 200mb, you would have 5 segments. This can be done by File->Save Segmented AVI and then get the following dialog:
