View Full Version : Windows XP 64 bit or Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit?

Which is the easier to use for x264 work?

I am asking because when using handbrake, HDconvert or ripbot, most of the time Win7 will freeze on the second pass, and I have to reboot the PC. I never had this problem under XP 64 and have no idea what is causing it because I cannot find a log file that can explain the problem!

Or maybe I should just have dual O/S?

Easier? Neither, really...

Windows 7 locking up is usually due to faulty drivers, or possibly hardware issues.

Are you overclocking at all? Have you done a full memtest recently? What about hard drive tests?

Thanks for the reply matey.

Memtest checks out fine, I don't overclock nothing either, hard drives are fine as well. I am assuming it is something to do with x264 encoding, as I have quite a lot of blu-ray to MKV rips on my Mede8ter player, and I ran some of the MKVs through ConvertXtoDVD 2-pass, just to test, and they came out fine!

Also, I have since tried Handbrake and HDConvertToX and they also froze the PC on the second pass, and I cannot get a log file from either tool to suss out what the damn problem is.

Thing is, x264 encoder was working OK a few months ago, cos I done loads of blu-ray films to MKV to put onto my WDTV. Then I knocked the WDTV over and it broke, and I have not done any encoding since I got my Mede8ter player a few weeks ago, and I have since re-installed Win 7 64 on my PC, and installed the necessary software and ran Win7DSFilterTweaker.

Make sure you're running a recent build of x264 (or whatever version is reccomended for your GUIs. I know Handbrake is picky).

I've been 100% Vista x64 and now Windows 7 x64 for nearly 3 years and haven't had any issues since Vista's teething problems. Many folks here run Windows 7 x64 and have no issues either, so it's definitely something on "your end", as the saying goes...

Download the latest x264 (64 bit version in your case) here:

also does your system lock up completely? (mouse locks up too?) I'm running 7 64bit with MeGUI with this revision without any problems. I haven't used Handbrake though.

x264 is a better hardware tester than prime95. Does the software under XP peg your system at 100% the same way it does in Win7, and does it use as much memory? If not, that might be why you see the problem under 7 and not XP. For starters, you can take some canned air to the innards and heatsink, or try pulling some of your RAM temporarily.

Yes, everything, including the mouse, locks up! I have to hold in the on/off button on the case until the system shuts down.

Also, I have managed to see that the encoding seems to stop at around the 5% mark on the 2nd pass.

I also use compressed air, on my G/Card and CPU and also hoover out the dust from inside the case on a weekly basis.

Check your system logs in your computer management console for any obvious lock-ups. To do this click start and paste: eventvwr.exe into search and press enter.

Then expand "Windows Logs" and check both the Application and System logs for any warnings or errors. If you find any please post them.

You may also want to run a chkdsk on your partitions. To do this, right click your partitions and go to properties. Then click on the Tools tab and click on "check now".

God only knows what that error is :(

P.S. It seems Windows 7 tried to shut down, thats why this error has occured, or so MS support page is saying!?!?!? Why would the PC wanna shut down during the encoding process?

Hmmm... I wonder if your power supply is faulty? It would make sense if the CPU was drawing more current than the power supply was able to put out.

If you can get your hands on a power supply tester that would be ideal. You can find them online for around $30 or so.

Something else I would try is updating your BIOS to the latest version. To do this, you will need to go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and see if there are any newer BIOS updates available. Newer boards usually have a utility that lets you flash it from within windows, and some let you flash it with a simple key combination as your computer is just turning on.

Also, have you made sure all your Windows updates are installed? What about driver updates? I would go through your system and check for newer drivers for every piece of hardware.

At last, got it sorted!!!

I stripped my whole PC down and thoroughly cleaned everything and I noticed the thermal paste on my CPU and cooler had gone dry!
I wonder if my CPU was overheating and the system was shutting down to prevent damage?
I put everything back together and have now done 3 blu ray to mkv encodes and everything has gone fine :)

I am now a happy bunny using my Mede8tor player to watch my mkv movies!

Many thanks for all the replies and suggestions.
