BBC1 - Doctor Who (22 may 2010)
Capped with dvbviewer - Stream is DVB SD - TS Stream

Analyzed with GSpot and others.

GSpot Report

SAR 1.250 (5:4)
PAR 1.422 (~10:7)
DAR 1.778 (16:9)

SAR x PAR = 1.7775

----

Load file into virtual dub (vdub) it shows on screen as 5:4 (the file info says its 16:9).

Add a video filter and select VDMod_Resize it also shows as 5:4.
If i set that to 16:9 then 720x576 becomes 720x405

If set to 1024x576 (16:9)
Or
If set to 512X576 (16:9)

Both of the above output 16:9 but the pixel shape is incorrect. The picture is wrong and more telling on gate sign at 08:03s into the program. It shows with near double lettering or near ghosting. Obviously its not jst about the gate sign lettering as the whole picture is affected, not clear and sharp as normal 16:9 would be.

Is there a way to correct this without having to resort to letter box black bars at top and bottom to make true 16:9. When viewed on pc at broadcast it was shown in full 16:9 without the black bars. Dvbviewer set to shown picture as broadcast, with no picture transform etc.

Viewing audiance could be many as i do give dvd with these files on them to others to watch. Though many like to have xvid for long time now. And don't bother with x264 or any others that they cannot play. Understandable as those formats like or need newer hardware.

This problem goes deeper as i have some years of collected tv caps. And they are the same, the example above is of the 1st uk channel, which is mirroed the same on the second channel (same company). The third fourth and more etc are all different, yet not one is a true 16:9 aspect. Maybe the only way to get that is with HD tv something i haven't got or want.

Haven't capped anything a year or two, until recently. But if cannot be corrected will forget about uk SD altogether. And rely on downloads from the internet instead for tv viewing (xvid only).

Upload a clip: Yes that is possible. Cannot upload here as lkeeps on saying error after uploading. Is uploading here to this site ever possible ? File size is within KB limits and packed to .zip.

Cannot yet find another suitable upload site. Have to find time to look around. Is there some known reason for the uploads here for upload to say its errored ?

..Little addition i have just noted, even though they are 720x576 every player upsizes them to 1024x576 for 16:9. Thats with all options for that to happen turned off.

If i want 16:9 of this file vdub selects 720x405 (16:9). The players will then play them at the aspect frame size, but report them as 720x400 (16:9). vdub will allow 1024x576 (16:9). Which is little use if decided to put some onto dvd (DVD D1 standard is 720x576) I'm sure dvd doesn't allow 1024x576, but that may have changed !.
