DVD upconverting or HTPC?

If I have a upconverting DVD player and a HTPC hooked to a 50'' 1080p TV, would the HTPC, with MPC-HC, look noticeably better than a upconverting DVD player's quality for DVD playback? Assume both players are connected by HDMI.

This all depends on how it's configured.

An upscaling DVD player will probably do better "out of the box" for progressive content.

An HTPC when tweaked properly can probably do better, particularly in regards to deinterlacing. It all depends :)
