Hey all,
I have a Canon 500D DSLR camera (aka T1i in USA), which, in addition to capturing still images, is able to record movie clips. It uses H.264 encoding for the videos, saving them in a .MOV container. If you asked around whether it's possible to edit these movie clips using Windows Movie Maker, you would probably be told "no". However, and I'd like to stress this due to the doubt I've generally encountered, some time ago I was able to successfully edit numerous 500D videos, simply by renaming the extension into .AVI.
But recently, I must have changed/replaced something or some file, because things aren't working so smoothly with the 500D clips anymore:
1) Importing a file while the audio track is visible, results in an instant crash message. Minimizing the video track so that the audio track isn't drawn, avoids the crash.
2) Still, editing the said files in WMM has become very unstable, as any command (moving in timeline, trimming a clip, etc) is likely to cause WMM to become unresponsive very quickly, forcing me to terminate it.
So this, on my older desktop running on WinXP. However, I also have a laptop running on WinXP, and a newer desktop computer running on Windows 7. On the latter, I have both the WMM Live and the older Vista-based version installed.
The problem is: even I though I can rename the extension, the importing doesn't unfortunately work on the WMM versions on the other two computers. Though, on the Windows 7 PC it works "partially": the file is added to the clip collection, but when it's dragged to the timeline, it can be inserted into the Audio-track only. The video itself remains black (since the clip cannot be inserted into the Video-track), but the sound of it can be heard.
It's an interesting problem I'd like to solve, and I'm curious if anyone on these forums is knowledgeable enough to tackle this. I could use some directions on what to try next. I've already tried reinstalling FFDShow, and the newer FFDShow tryout, to see if those would make any difference and enabled importing 500D movie clips on the other two computers as well, but it didn't seem to work (or I didn't know what settings to tweak). I'm also aware of the compatibility-tab in WMM options, and have tried resetting it to default settings before importing, but that didn't work either.
If there are any further details/clarification you might need to be able to help with this (and I'm quite sure there is something), just let me know, and I'll reply back.
Cheers.
