View Full Version : Converting To .mov (QuickTime)

Howdy,
I'm looking for some guides to converting various formats to .mov/QuickTime, but the doom9 format conversion guides don't list QuickTime (yeah, probably for good reason).
I *refuse* to install QuickTime (which has some authoring tools I hear), and I use QuickTime Alternative when I have the rare need to watch a .mov file. But recently I have a requirement to convert some of my own .avi and .vob clips into .mov and I would like to do it without installing QuickTime or some other mess.
I see that [spam] claims it can convert from any format into any other, but I don't trust it and would rather use a tool that I can trust. I'm not an expert, and wish there was something like Auto-GK for this....

Searching around here I can't find many threads about this (maybe I'm not using the right search keywords). So I tried a web search....
Anyone heard of or used [spam removed]

Quicktime can play h.264/aac in an MP4 file as well; no need to go out of your way for this.

I've remuxed various .AVIs into .MOVs through ffmpeg,
and they ran fine under Haali Media Splitter + DirectShow —
— however, I really don't know whether they were "QuickTime-compatible", or not.

If you want to make a QuickTime compatible file, I suggest using the MP4 container with H.264 and AAC.
You can easily achieve this with x264 and FAAC or Nero's AAC encoder, plus MP4Box.
Simply encode with x264 using QuickTime compliant settings (keep in mind if you're targeting iDevices that the restrictions are rather strict). The Mac version of QuickTime is fully capable of playing Level 5 + high profile, last I checked. I'm not sure if the Windows version is as capable, and in any case its decoder is hideously slow.

Thanks for all the quick replies. I meant to try some of these ideas out, but the environment that required the QuickTime format looks to be very restrictive and I managed to convince the right people that we can find something better that doesn't restrict us to .mov containers. Thanks anyway to everyone as usual.
@neuron2: I wasn't attempting to spam by putting a link to a certain application in my original post, but I agree that tool looks really spammy, so it's fine with me if you don't want it mentioned on this site.

U can get codec in app store to enable quicktime to play avi.
Anyway, u still can use mpegstream to generate mp4 file for playback on your quicktime.
