Year One: Which ripper is right?

Today I ripped "Year One" DVD (R2). First I used RipIt4Me which told me there is no protected pgc and so I let it do its job. I ended up fine with no errors and unreadable sectors. I had some free space on my HDD and so I also ripped this title with AnyDVD 6.6.4.2 and afterwards with the latest Passkey 7.0.2.1 / DVDFab 7.0.5.5 combo. Both, AnyDVD & DVDFab created an VTS (the one with the main movie) of about 100 MB smaller than RipIt4Me. After loading the rips into VOBBlanker all rips showed the same VTS with 2 titles (theatrical and unrated version) with exactly the same lengths. The Cell View (in VOBBlanker) also showed up identical timestamps, but with differnet sizes.
Did anyone notice similar behaviour in the past?

I have to analyze the rips a bit deeper now and it didn't make any preview so far.

BTW DVDFab had problems ripping the menu VTS correctly, but that's not a new problem for me.

Yes of course I will do that. I will analyze the different rippers outputs and tell you. But on the fist look it seems that Fab didn't recognize that the german menu is located in cell#2 of the menu PGCs. Fab ignored these. When I remember correctly I saw this on an very old release "Die Liga der außergewöhnlichen Gentlemen (Special Edition, Disc 1, R2) ("The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen"), too.

I have noticed when using DvD Decrypter; that ripping the same source has concluded with different results. (I am talking about LUK's not fab btw) One ended with a slightly larger file interleaved the other was smaller and was progressive. The anomaly was seen doing the rips back to back on CSI Season 1 disk 1 PGC 2. The same PGC was riped both times, but like I said the resulting VOB had changed...

So it might be that ripit4me using dvd decrypter is doing what it did to me only to you...

Hi fengtao,

i made 2 screenshot to show you what I meant earlier. Fab stripped cell#2 of each menu pgc and reuses cell#1 instead. The menu works but there is no german language anymore, because that's what in cell#2 was before.
The descision which program has to be played is made is the pre commands of the pgc: if ( gprm(11) == 2 ) then { LinkPGN Program 2 }

BTW I used Passkey 7.0.2.1 & Fab 7.0.5.5 (Free Edition).


I ripped "Pineapple Express", R2 with Fab 7.0.5.8 today, which has the same menu structure with (nearly) the same result as described above.
I also want to know which settings do you advise for pathplayer if one uses the combination of Passkey and FabDecrypter? Do both apps needs pathplayer enabled or do I have to disable pathplayer in FabDecrypter If I only want to "copy" the files to HDD?

Hi fengtao,

I found another one, but on that title Fab did it right: "Imagine That!". Menu is structured the same as on "Year One" (1 PGC with multiple cells for each language) and the descision point is in the pre commands.

BTW I used Passkey 7.0.2.1 / FabDecrypter 7.0.5.5 (Free) for this one.

Let's get back to my initial question why the rippers outputs differ in size. I found the reason and it was quite simple...

RipIt4Me starts DVDDecrypter in FileMode and therefore the output size is exactly the size the VOBs have on the original DVD. But AnyDVD and FABDecrypter have pathplayer or whatever it is called to analyze the disc before ripping. And those 2 obviously found an unused audio track in the Titleset and stripped it on ripping. That's why 100 MB are "lost".

That didn't come in my mind first. I thought it could have something to do because the titleset is interleaved...
