I just got my new work laptop, a Dell Precision M6500 with a mobile Core i7 Q820 CPU (4 cores + HT), and it absolutely kills. In most cases, it's actually faster than my Q6600, which has powered my desktop for the past two years.

Here are some benchmarks, generated via x264 from a 500mb piece trimmed from my BluRay edition of "The Men who Stare at Goats".

Decoder - CoreAVC 2.0

VirtualDub Video Analysis Pass
Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz - 65fps
i7 Q820 @ 1.73 GHz - 108fps

1080p x264 --preset slower --crf 18 --tune film --vbv 62500
Q6600 - 2.01fps
Q820 - 1.86fps
Q820 w/ CUDA - 1.96fps

1080p x264 --preset medium --crf 18 --tune film --vbv 62500
Q6600 - 6.90fps
Q820 - 7.48fps
Q820 w/ CUDA - 7.89fps

1080p x264 --preset veryfast --crf 18 --tune film --vbv 62500
Q6600 - 17.40fps
Q820 - 19.07fps
Q820 w/ CUDA - 20.79fps

I only have CUDA results for the laptop, since it has a QuadroFX 2800 GPU, and my desktop has a Radeon 4830.

Quite impressive. The RGBLED backlit screen is quite nice too. Hello deep blacks!

Note, these were some casual benchmarks, and weren't repeated. Expect a reasonable margin of error. I'm just flat-out shocked at how powerful this CPU is. Of course, carrying around a nearly 10 pound laptop (and an absurdly large 210W AC adapter) isn't the best thing ever, but this little rocket ship will be living in a docking station most of the time... :)
