I want to make a custom DVD that consists of the following:
i) a 5 minute scene from a VHS rip, which I have custom subbed, followed by
ii) a title set from a retail DVD I have custom subbed.
What I'd like to do is make the DVD play the first section (a prologue cut from the DVD), then automatically start the second section when the first one ends. Is there some way to do this? I'd also preferably like to keep the menus and extras from the DVD intact.
Thanks for any help!

Open the retail DVD with your custom subs in PGCEdit. Go Title->Import First-Play (startup) clip) and follow the easy instructions from there. Make sure to tick 'Don't pause; it's an animated clip'. Your 5 minute clip has to have already been authored for DVD.
However, you seem to be saying you want to play the 5 minute clip followed by the main movie. Is that correct? And if so, is the only time the menus are to be seen is after the main video finishes? I've outlined First-Play->Menu->Main Movie. Equally easy is Menu->Start-Up Clip->Movie. If you want to do it that way, then highlight the main video and go Title->Import Title's Intro Clip. To do it literally as you're asking will require that you change some navigation commands to skip over the menu initially. It's fairly easily to do as well, but requires more knowledge. The 2 ways I've outlined require you to know nothing at all.

Thanks a lot for your very helpful reply.

That's it exactly. Although I've used PGC Edit before to check on subtitle stream information, I know next-to-nothing about its other functionality. I will try what you suggest when I get home from work tonight :-)

Do the Title->Import Title's Intro Clip thing. At that point you'll go Menu->Start-up clip->Main Video. After you get that working and saved, then follow this guide to skip over the menu and go right to the start-up clip:

The macro's have changed somewhat since that guide was written. After tracing to the beginning of the start-up clip and 'Toggle PGC Pre/Post Breakpoint', do it again back to the beginning of the start-up clip, followed by PGC->Jump To PGC Upon DVD Insert.
