x264 lossless is amazing

Just for the record...

I was doing some test encodes today, and took a ProRes HQ source (~200mbps 1080p) and encoded it at 3 different bitrates, CRF12, 50mbps ABR, and lossless.

The two lossy encodes were totally transparent, and the lossless file was only 10mbps larger than the ProRes HQ source. Sure, I went to 8 bit 4:2:0, but still. Very impressive :p The source was very grainy, too...

Do you know what PSNR can you get with AVC-I at 100Mbit?
I can image that AVC at 100Mbit can be very good quality, but to difficult to edit. AVC-I seams to be very good and some editing software (eg. Edius) deals with with easily.

Indeed. 50mbps is enough in most cases with usual GOP sizes, but 100mbps is rather large - not enough of a reduction from ProRes to be sufficiently useful, since ProResHQ can be anywhere from 120-200mbps. 50mbps is SWEET, and while it does lose a tiny bit of quality, it's unnoticable when your target is an 9mbps CBR file :p

Keep in mind that ProRes is 4:2:2+10bit and h.264 is 4:2:0+8bit unless you are using a 4:2:2 H.264 codec.

I wish that x264 supported 4:2:2. It would be the ultimate archiving codec for pro video.

Indeed, but again, when I'm ultimately transcoding to 9mbps cbr.... :)

If anything some nice dithering would be nice for the 10->8 conversion, but whatever..
