Question, I have backed up all my Dvd's as individual Iso's have quite a few seasons of tv shows, I am wondering if I change my iso's to mkv format will I save any space on my HD? And if this will, what program would you recommend using to make the change from vob to mkv?
Thanks for any help you can provide

Hi!what program would you recommend using to make the change from vob to mkv?MakeMKV should be able to do that for you (WITHOUT mounting the .ISO image files).

To determine what kind of size savings, I'd suggest you convert one of your .ISO image files to an .MKV file and make a percentage comparison...

No, I don't think MakeMKV is a good solution for this situation, since MakeMKV just remuxs the source from one container format to another (MKV) container format.

DVD is mpeg2 based, to save space, it's good to encode the mpeg2 source to H.264 based, like mp4, as H.264 provides much good compression than mpeg2 under the same visual quality.

But, is it so necessary to consider saving the HDD space? May be buy a new TB HDD will be a good solution.

If you do transcode, you won't have menus. If that doesn't matter, I recommend DGIndex -> Avisynth -> x264 -> MKVMerge along with copied or Nero Digital AAC-encoded audio and subs ripped with SubRip and (optionally) styled with Aegisub. Chapters can be brought into each MKV using ChapterXTractor or Chaptergrabber (though both auto-naming services used by the latter seem to have gone offline).

You can find some GUI's for encoding in the GUI forum, most have many options, for best results you will need to read a couple of guides to get some basic encoding knowledge.

...iso's to mkv format...

ISO and MKV are an image and a container, respectively. An image can also be regarded as a container.

Transferring 2 kilos of apples from the trunk of your auto to your icebox (fridge) won't make them weight 1.5 kilos, unless you eat one or two during the transport.

You have to change the codec or the compression (usually measured in kbps) in order to get a significant size decrease. What you get is the difference in muxing overhead (which for DVD is more or less the same for all containers I know) thus no big deal. Well, ISO may contain "unused space", which might be quite relevant, but this is more an exception than a rule.

Remuxing a VOB into an .mkv file can save some space if there are extra audio tracks and subtitles that can be eliminated. Whether or not it's "a good solution for this situation" is up to the original poster to decide, if it saves enough space for his needs.

Thanks for the great advice, considering all the options, I think I just might buy another 2 Terrabyte drive and start filling it up, leaving them be as Vob's. I really hope they come up with larger HD's soon, took me less than 6 months of backing up my tv shows to fill up this first 2 Tb drive......
