Help with Nandub plz...visual diffrerences...

Hello.

I've ripped less than 20 movies so I'm considered a newbie.

I've started with regular dvdrip to SBC/AC3 with nandub...
Last night I did a 3CD rip off of a DVD and found a difference.

The difference between DVD quality and my 3CD rip was there: it was not the quality...quality was as good as DVD but the picture was not as sharp as DVD. Is there any function in nandub so I can make it little sharper? I think I used precise bicubic for encoding...and it was divx 3 codec for SBC. Would 2pass divx 4 VBR result better?

I started with Gknot and got d2v and avs...and went to nandub for resize and encoding...

OH OH OH, another question. I aimed for three 700MB CDs...so 2100mb which included the 300+ AC3 files in calculation. But when the encoding was done, the movie was only about 1500mb. What is the problem here? Do I not include the AC3 audio for the bitrate calculation?

Hi-The facts that you maxed out at 1500MB and the movie didn't seem sharp enough for your tastes could be related. You didn't state what resolution you used, but if possible you could raise the resolution and maybe solve both problems.

On the other hand, perhaps you already have a high resolution, and you just have a particularly compressible movie, in which case you might want to just redo it for 2 CDs. DivX 3.11 is the sharpest of the codecs (see Doom9's recent codec comparison test), so switching codecs won't solve the sharpness problem.

There is a setting in Nandub which partially affects sharpness, but since I'm a lazy GKnot user, someone else will have to help you with that. Also, check that your player is set for the highest quality setting.

If your movie is too soft, you can try dropping the cripsness modulation, as that automatically smoothes the movie.

I want to clearup one thing for me:) crispness modulation 40% will look more smoother than use crispness modulation 30% and 0% will be the sharpest,am i right?

Hey thanks for your help.

the resolution I used is big enough I think: 720 x 382.
I've ripped 2 movies yesterday, both shooting for 3CDs.
Both movies came out about 1500, with out sound, but should have been like 1900 = 2100 - 300(AC3).

And I did not play with crip modulation. Where do I change that?
Since this happened twice already, maybe I'll not include the sound file in the bitrate calculation....hmm...

Any other suggestions?

Well, your resolution is certainly high enough. But that vertical resolution is no good, and could perhaps be the source of your problem. Ideally it should be divisible by 16, or at least 8, but that isn't divisible by even 4. Maybe use 384. You should do your cropping in Gordian Knot-it never screws up.

You might try a Compressibility test in GKnot as well, and it will tell you whether or not to do those for 2 or 3 CDs.

To find the Crispness Setting in Nandub, go Video-SBC Options-SBC Settings-Motion-Crispness Modulation.

Ripe73-Hi-Yeah-0% is the sharpest setting.

But does that affect the final file size?

When I make movies in nandub, do the files have to be in openDML to be able to exceed 2gb limit? what's the deal with that?

I'm using NTFS and my guess was the file size limit is alot bigger than 2gb.

Anyway, bicubic is higher quality than bilinear right?
