converting AVI files to DVD format

Looking to experiment trying to create videos in say, windows movie maker and then putting them on a DVD and have them playable in a DVD player.

I am looking for a shareware program to convert to VTS files that a dvd player will reconizes and play.

Anyone have a program that will do this, or recommend a retail program that will do this?

For a commercial program and fairly straight forward to use is the latest version of VSO ConvertXtoDVD. I've been using it since the first free version up to the latest beta's.

From AVI to DVD requires a few steps because the DVD Video specification is quite limited in what video and audio compression systems it allows, whereas container formats for digital video files such as AVI, are more flexible.

The video in your input file, if not DVD-compatible MPEG2, needs to be converted to this. The audio, if not PCM, MP2 or Dolby Digital AC3 will need converting to one of the above. The converted video and audio then need to be used to create the DVD video fileset. I do not use Windows Movie Maker and do not know if it can output video and audio that are DVD-compliant.

If not, there are plenty of free and commercial video encoders, audio encoders and authoring tools but for a beginner, a "one-click" program that automates these processes is probably the easiest way to start.

I've used DVD Flick for a number of projects. It has been able to handle anything I can throw at it (.mov, .avi with h264, Xvid or DivX, .mkv, raw ripped DVD .VOB files, even surveillance video from work), and it's just a couple of clicks for setting up things like menu options. It's not perfect video because it won't create interlaced 29.97 that will play perfectly smooth, but it's good enough for casual use.

Windows DVD Maker integrated with Win 7 maybe, I never made a DVD from AVI, always the other way round.
