View Full Version : Looking for a lossless DVD backup solution.

Hi all,

Basically what I am looking for is a lossless backup solution. They had a Western Digital 2 TB external on sale so I took the plunge. Now that I actually have extra space (and how!) I was thinking it would be the perfect time to backup my DVD collection because sadly I am a butterfingers but it is also a good candy.

Anyway... In terms of video editing knowledge/experience I would say it is minimal, but what I do not know I can learn (when I have time).

I have tried MakeMKV and it basically does what I want it to do. I pop in a DVD, 20 minutes later done (my DVD drive on reads DVD-ROMs at around 1x). The only issue I have is that when I am watching the file in VLC when I am seeking (jumping to a specific spot) VLC will crash which has never happen before or with other files.

So basically I am just looking to see if the grass is greener on the other side. Also it never hurts to compare what else is out there.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Just make ISO images. Then you'll be able to easily burn real disc copies as well as have many more options for playback and transcoding.

As said, making ISO images is one solution.

However if you are looking for perceptually lossless backups, then x264/mkv is the way to go IMHO. I don't think the issue here is MakeMKV though. If you are happy with the output quality and size of the files, then the only problem seems to be your VLC crashing.

Which is really easy to fix. Don't use VLC. Use Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC)

CCCP would probably be a good starting point. Install it and it will come with MPC-HC and all the stuff you need to playback most anything you need.

Hi!

For .MKVs created using MakeMKV, I have no trouble playing them in Windows Media Player v.11 (or v.9), supported by ffdshow...

Yes, but do you have flawless seeking?

20 minutes seems pretty quick for a full movie encode. Maybe vlc is crashing because the file is corrupt/incomplete. Neuron2 is right, iso files are the probably the best way to go. It's nice to have an untouched backup.

@neuron2 Yes, but do you have flawless seeking? (Sometimes, at about 4 A.M., I miss the bowl ;>})

I can click on any place on the timeline and it immediately jumps to that point in the video.

By the way, I've had similar success using the "Splash Lite" player...

makemkv doesnt re-encode, it just dumps the selected streams into an mkv. Sounds more like a VLC issue, which has always been spotty with mkv.
