In this topic I would like to document known bugs in Haali Media Splitter.

I encourage everyone to post detailed bug reports here in this topic. Please include a sample file whenever possible.

Bugs in all recent versions:

MKV's with DTS-HD MA created by mkvmerge (mkvtoolnix) are not bitstreamed correctly by ffdshow (stuttering). Sample (http://www.mediafire.com/?tmufzougmjt).
AC3 inside MP4 container gives error "MP4: could not find dac3 box" with files created by QuickTime. Sample (http://www.mediafire.com/?2gydwglwwwn).
Files with a large number of tracks (>32 ?) won't load.
Configuration can't be accessed through the 64-bit splitter (rundll32.exe splitter.x64.ax,Configure).
The splitter does not link matroska files if opened using AviSynth or Direct264. See this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=154779).
(MPEG-TS) DTS-HD audio is not recognized. Sample (http://rapidshare.com/files/371604348/Test.m2ts.html) (has 5 audio tracks! one DTS-HD, two DTS, two AC3).

Solution for the DTS-HD problem:
You can fix your file by remuxing it with MkvToolnix (http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/win32/pre/mkvtoolnix-unicode-4.4.0-build20101115-315-setup.exe) (version 4.4.0 build 20101115 or newer is required). This will add the "Default duration" element to the Matroska header for the audio track.

If you want to use Haali's splitter, remux the file with mp4box and it should work fine (otherwise use mpc's splitter).

In my opinion the bug is that the best mkv splitter out there it's embedded with other splitter when many people are looking just for a better (than Gabest's) / best mkv splitter ! especially now with windows 7.
So since most of the bugs are related to the other embedded splitters and to the installer I think it will better for everyone to release the mkv splitter separately and fix the Explorer integration (thumbnail feature) for mkv files (not working with the current version and, at least, Windows 7 64-bit)

I'm all for healty competition in the form of one upstream splitter for each format, and an infinite number of forks from that are for specific niche's.

I hope that Haali will open the source of the splitter, or at least work on mpc-hc's splitters instead so we can have the best of both worlds in a single splitter.

It already is possible to use only part of the Haali Media Splitter functionality. With for example the K-Lite Codec Pack you can select which splitter gets used for each container. You can even change your splitter preferences at any time post-installation.

Thumbnails work fine on Windows 7 without Haali's shell extension. There are just two limitations: 1) ffdshow must be set as the preferred decoder for H.264, and 2) thumbnails will always show the first frame of the video.

Remove it with Unlocker tool. Then add the new file.

Or if you would disable the thumbnailing in Haali options then the file will should not be in use anymore after a reboot. That would allow you to replace it as well.

Or reboot and just don't visit any folder with videos inside.

Hi. I'm not sure if this is issue with splitter or maybe this have something to do with divx tech preview but I decided to post here first.
I'm using latest haali splitter on win7 32bit. When I have some linked mkv files, they work as they should but after accessing them, they become locked by explorer.exe and can't be deleted or modified so I need to use unlocker on them. Can anyone confirm?

I don't think this bug was present in previous version.
When i disabled some options while installing, i could easily switch to Haali or Gabest in MPC-HC.
I think i should go back to previous version since i haven't seen any progress in the latest Haali.

Anyone notice the issue where HMS causes corruption while splitting M2TS files? I've seen it happen twice now on totally different systems while encoding with x264. I can definitely rule out x264 because the corruption is not aligned to macroblocks. The only thing the two systems have in common is that both were updated to the latest Haali Media Splitter.

I tried to narrow it down with Dark Shikari but the only thing that we could establish is that it wasn't x264, though it only seemed to happen with certain x264 settings. Time to roll back to the only good version.. again.

I have winxp 64bit edition, and Im having real trouble getting the shell extension in windows explorer part to work correctly, i have tried all of the following versions: 1.9.42.1, 1.9.63.13, and even the latest version, is shell extension completely gone on these versions?

1.9.42.1 worked fine with shell extension in winxp 32 bit edition, but on the 64bit edition it just doesnt seem to work, is there any manual way or workaround to get it working properly?

Hi samuri, mosu is right; nothing to do with Haali for the time being.
mkv files created by MkvMergeGui are never problematic with MPC-Gabest or Solveig Splitters.
And dtshd-ma is horrible with haali.

mkv with Gabest:

LPCM:
LPCM works with ReClock directly without an additional decoder.

THD:
It can bitstream over ffdshow.

DTSHD:
It can bitstream over ffdshow.


mkv with Haali:

LPCM:
Haali will be directly linked to ReClock and stream the audio. It doesn't need any additional LPCM decoder.

THD:
Gives blue light and no problem in bitsreaming THD inside mkv.

DTSHD:
Gives blue light but it's problematic: lots of drop-outs in video and audio.

its seems haali ignores audio flags as if you have a movie with the first 2 audio tracks as DTS and a third track as AC3 it picks the 3rd track the AC3 version even if the flag in the mkv file has set the first audio DTS as the default track.

i post this as my first tracks are dts and 3rd tracks are ac3 but teh third track is french ac3 and the first audio track is english DTS.

if i play the same movie in vlc player the player picks the right default track and plays the english version but haali does not it seems to play the ac3 track over the default 1st track.

is this a bug ?

For kmplayer, if unregister HaaliSplitter filter in system filter manager, it's ok to play the file.

I found two bugs in Haali Media Splitter:

-Major problems with a lot of MPEG-1-PS files (wrong duration, not seekable, won´t play at all). There is no problem with Microsoft Splitter or MPC-HD internal.

-Does not support IMA ADPCM in Mov. I yust got a Mov-file with SVQ3/IMA ADPCM, with MPC-HD internal everything works fine, with Haali Media Splitter only video is displayed (file can be downloaded here: http://www.mtmfilms.org/mtm6/2_hi.mov).

DTS-HD MA doesn't work with the arcsoft dts filter with haali, so I'm guessing they still haven't fixed the bitstreaming issue, assuming they both don't work for the same reason.
Though, it appears to have no problem with DTS-HD HRA for some reason.

I don't have the hardware to explicitly test bitstreaming of DTS-HD MA though.

Yea, I'm aware of the MakeMKV + haali thing, believe me. I asked Mosu about it and he said it was a Haali issue and that they'd need to fix it. I'm inclined to trust him. There's something about mkvmerge created DTS-HA MA tracks that Haali doesn't like.

So, after all that, Mosu figured out how to fix MKVMerge. Unreal. :D Anyway, he posted a new build in his MKVMerge thread and there's information posted in there on how to fix existing MKV's that are broken with Haali by just using the header editor. VERY sweet!!

You need to use MKVMerge. MMG= MkvMerge Gui. Open that and follow those instructions and you're good to go.

In version 2010-11-21 [1.10.348.15] (and many before) the splitter leaves mkfxxx.tmp files in the system temp folder {C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp} when it loads MKV files with attached fonts. The xxx seems to be a random hex code. Here's a sample list of the files newly created when opening one subtitled MKV:

mkf31C.tmp
mkf31D.tmp
mkf319.tmp

The splitter creates these files and then fails to remove them when the graph is closed or application quits. The files build up ad infinitum. Sometimes some of the files are removed but one or more is always left behind.

Hi, I've got a whole bunch of 5.1 AC3 files that are recognized as such when using any other MKV splitter(KMP/PotPlayer/LAVSplitter), but HMS seems to recognize them as stereo...and that fubars my automatic profiles in ffdshow audio(ffdshow loads the stereo profile :().

Haali Media Splitter recognizes the main audio track (TrueHD) as E-AC3 one second, then AC3 the next, then E-AC3, etc.

In version 2010-11-21 [1.10.348.15] (and many before) the splitter leaves mkfxxx.tmp files in the system temp folder {C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp} when it loads MKV files with attached fonts. The xxx seems to be a random hex code. Here's a sample list of the files newly created when opening one subtitled MKV:

Don't forget Antivirus Pro Active scanner or other Application that permanently watch IO actions they could interfere here and not allow the deletion of files being scanned or freezed @ scanning (handles stuck), happened for me already with betas of Eset Nod issues where fixed fast though Adobe Flash Player, Internet Download Manager everything that creates somekind of physical temp file where the scanner gets problems with (most scanners also have exclusion lists if such problems occur though that's only a workaround, though for IO time critical stuff it can be the only solution) can result in strange behavior like not being able to save the final version of the file (For Adobe Flash Player it can result even in Frame drops especially on older systems if the Video is being scanned while Progressively downloaded) or as you mentioned leftovers of temporary files. So always make sure you turn of any Pro Active Security solution and any applications that could interfere with the file system on access before testing such issues to be sure the issue isn't 3rd party related.

These on access scanning bugs are very common especially for applications that scanning metadata out of video files best example i guess was Microsofts big shmedia.dll fail that caused handle issues in the past (.AVI files in the beginning not being able to be deletable though it can happen for any format that has shell extension support), when there is a demux issue it also locks the handle :)
Even Googles Android OS Media Management had to fight with these issues in the beginning, especially fuzzy logiced streams are problematic for most scanner (and can be even a major security issue) can cause it to crash it needs to be very robust to avoid this the same Windows based applications can die with strange defective streams if they not prepared for such cases :)

That's true, both VideoHelp and haali.su/mkv report "March 03, 2011" as the date of the "latest" release.

I get the same behavior with an earlier version of Haali, don't remember which but I haven't updated it in ages. More likely it is a recently introduced bug in MPC-HC; try an earlier version.

The latest mmg recognizes ttf font as "application/x-font-ttf" as default MIME type.
Haali fails to load this type of embedded font, it only load "application/x-truetype-font" fonts, which is detected as default in old versions of mmg.

Other splitter like LAV/AV/Gabest can load "application/x-font-ttf" fonts.

I have heard that HMS uses AddFontResource to install fonts temporarily, which doesn't automatically release fonts if not exit normally. Using AddFontResourceEx instead ( or using AddFontMemResourceEx like LAV ) will automatically release fonts resources even when the process is closed accidentally.

This DTS in MP4 is created by an unofficial way.
'mp4a' + ObjectTypeIndication for DTS audio is not specified in the specification (ETSI TS 102 114 V1.3.1).
DTS core stream shall be assigned with codingname 'dtsc'.

If this file is created by libavformat, only libavformat shall split it.
Don't scatter files that are out of spec.

We have been working with the x-cart developers in extending its source code to be able to do things in the software delivery space that nobody else has done with it before. The newest version is, unfortunately, still 1.11.288.0 from Sept. 9th, 2011. I uploaded the installer I found off my hard drive from that date and with that version number here (http://cccp-project.net/stuff/2011-09-09_MatroskaSplitter_1.11.288.0.exe), as I can't see it being available from the support side of CoreCodec any more (which was the only place officially distributing it except for haali.su).

Also, I sent out a long e-mail to Mike on the 23rd of December about the current bugs and problems with his splitter, as well as about the possible plans for the future of it -- but I have yet to have received any kind of reply :<

There was some talk about possibly open sourcing the splitter at one point of time during late 2011 or maybe even early 2012, but it seems like that hasn't gone anywhere as he has disappeared from various places (his bouncer still seems to be connected to Freenode, but he is not on any channels and does not reply to poking with private messages).

In the beginning of March I got a test build of Haali's splitter from him in a reply I got to an e-mail regarding the currently still-alive bugs in his Matroska splitter that I knew of. And after some thinking I decided to push it out a bit for testing, so I am now linking to it here as well. Now that LAV finally supports virtual timelines and segment linking in matroska, its need has gone down by a notch, but it still could be useful/interesting for some people.

This does not affect the TrueHD/MLP media sub types passed to the next filter (still uses AC3 media sub type and thus breaks decoders that believe the sub type and do not check further), as well as does not add any other font MIME types for font loading from Matroska files. Armada from the MPC-HC team did say that for example seeking in certain Matroska samples did become better, but otherwise no clear changes have been noticed.

You don't really have to ask me for that to be honest. If I find a test build to not be completely broken, and I haven't been specifically asked to not push it around, I will post it as it is for the best interest of the public :) .

In any case, I got another reply from Haali, almost a month since the last one and a month and ten days or so since the last test build he linked to me. My gentle query about his past comments regarding open sourcing it, or at least giving out debug symbols, didn't seem to get noticed, but that isn't such a big deal. What is more important is the test build that was linked in the reply:

A warning for anyone that uses it, the uninstaller is a bit broken and may fail to unregister the x64 components. So you may need to do some manual cleanup in the registry afterwards. Dunno if older versions had the same bug.

I use the TS Doctor, which uses Haali as a Splitter for it's cutting preview window

If I use LAV as a Splitter it doesn't crash, but with Haali it crashes

The developer of the TSD says that this is caused by the Haali Splitter because of the issue mentioned above and not by the TSD itself

Haali has been inactive for a long time, so I don't think there is much chance of a fix. Jeeb has a copy of the source code I think, so he might be of some help.

Is there anything specific that TSD does differently compared to a normal player? Because I would have expected it to crash for normal playback as well if the cause is as you describe.

That is not going to happen.

If there is something that Haali can do that LAV can't then you should submit a feature request (or bug report). The only thing I can think of right now is the ability to switch Programs in a MPEG-TS files, which is already on the LAV Filters (long term) ToDo list. In general LAV is already way ahead of Haali in terms of functionality and stability.

LAV is more for playback than Haali

Haali is way more precise if it comes to reading out exact timecodes/frame-types etc.
all this is needed by editor like the TSD which allows you to cut your records

DirectShow is a terrible platform for cutting, its not designed for that purpose, and any tool trying to use it for that is flawed by design.

But like I mentioned before, anyone is welcome to provide patches for a feature they care about. Thats really how open source works. I'm not paid by anyone to work on anything specific, I work on what I care about, and what I want in the future of my project. And considering I don't see DirectShow even as a viable framework for editing, you can imagine how much I care about such improvements myself. Just asking for stuff isn't going to make it magically appear, unless someone wants to work on it.

and of course directshow isn't perfect but it would cost a lot of money for the licenses to write something on your own (since Cypheros software is commercial)
