View Full Version : A couple questions about SmartRipper/Gordian Knot

Hey y'all.... First off i'd like to apologize for my lack of knowledge of the correct terminology related to my questions. I know i'm gonna forget a couple things, but hopefully they will be clear enough for someone to understand.. OK, now that you've read my disclaimer :)

1.) Within Gordian Knot, it states very stricly, that only SmartRipper should be used to rip VOB's to be used with the rest of the rip package. My questions are why is it so important to ONLY use SmartRipper. I'm curious for knowledge purposes but also a technical purpose as well.. It seems as though SmartRipper rips DVD's at a slower rate than what i get with DVD Decrypter. Also SmartRipper like to crash on my XP system after about the 3rd or 4th VOB file. DVD Decrypter has been very stable for me.

2.)Now because of this crashing problem i have with SmartRipper. If it is mandatory to use SmartRipper with the GK rip pack and Smart Ripper crashes half way thru.. Can i restart SR and use the Files View instead of the Movie View to select the VOB files that weren't ripped before the crash occurred or are there other files that SR creates in the ripping process??

and finally
3.)I'm using a Dell Laptop for my ripping. It's a PIII 1.2, 256 Ram with a Sony CRX850E DVD-CRW (Don't let the E after the 850 fool you into thinking it's external, it's in the fixed bay of the laptop) Anyway, it's rated to read at 16x, however i only get 1.7x max in DVD DEcrypter and 0.9x max in SmartRipper. Now i've gone thru other threads and all i've seen were suggestions to turn on UDMA related to the controller or the drive. I am checked withing my Control Panel in Windows XP. However someone mentioned to make sure this is checked off in a BIOS setting.. A setting i can't seem to change in my BIOS. OK, So my question here is. Any other tips in speeding up this rate?? Unlocking my drive for faster read rates.. I believe i read somewhere that DVD drives are actually factory locked at certain speeds??...??

I believe that's all for now... Thank you for keeping a great forum, i've learned a lot hanging out here... And thanks in advance to those who shall respond....

there are 2 reasons why it states to use smartripper: 1) (actually it states to only use the version that comes with the installer) the version in the package has been properly tested and is known to work (applies to all the softs in the package.. many people screw up by using other softs)
2) smartripper does ifo parsing. you may have noticed all the extra stuff in the main vobs, ranging from fbi warnings, over additional studio logos till trailers. an ifo parsing ripper is able to cut this right out... dvd decrypter is not. Now.. light_uk would argue that not so many discs have that stuff (I own about 250DVDs and I tell you.. most have it) plus that the studio logo which is the most popular thing isn't really a problem. But.. the thing with these "extras" is that usually they have but one audio track.. so say you want to use an alternative language track.. the intro and extro will have no audio creating a huge amount of synch problems which most people are not able to overcome (admittedly, they never even read my manual synching guide and properly try for themselves).

3)some drives are factory locked, but the only one I know of for sure is the thoshiba sd-m1502 which is a regular pc unit, not a notebook unit. Bad speed is mostly related to dma settings (you didn't state if it's on.. you just said you checked;) or also ide configuration in general (sometimes just re-distributing the drives to the 2 ide channels and switching master and slave will do the trick... unfortunately this is impossible for you). And as for the bios.. you may have to check the the IT guys in your company (I'm assuming it's a company notebook because you said yo can't access the bios.. and it should be possible for a private notebook after all)

last but not least: smartripper is not a must.. gknot also comes with vstrip which is also an approved program for ripping.. and, while I don't have any test results yet cladMdec should also work since it's based on vstrip.

OK, so a question related to the first part of your response. IFO parsing is included in SmartRipper. I'm assuming then that it takes care of getting rid of the audio related to studio logo appearing etc... so if i rip in DVDDecrypter, nothing will be parsed, whether it's audio or video. If i'm correct in this assumption, where's the problem with synch come in? Being that DVDDec. won't take anything away. After all, any parsing to take place takes place during the actual ripping of the VOB's... Right? :)

OK, drive issues. That sucks about the factory locking. So, is a law suit for false advertising in the works??? :) Why would they lock the drive like that? As far as my comment in the original post "I am checked within my Control Panel in Windows XP" should have read It is checked withing my CP in Win XP.. SO yes i am set. As far as my bios goes.. I am on a personal laptop.. When i get into my BIOS setup, i can't find anywhere to edit the configuration of the drive. It just lists it as being on the second controller, etc....

Basically these questions started in trying to find a quicker ripper that would work with this package.. RIght now, I rip in about an hour, then the rest of the conversion takes anywhere from 4-5 hours.. Making this a 5-6 hour project. Just making sure i'm using my time wisely.. :)

ANyway, thanks for your reply and info.. And thanks for any future help...

>IFO parsing is included in SmartRipper. I'm assuming then that it takes care of getting rid of the audio related to studio logo appearing etc... so if i rip in DVDDecrypter, nothing will be parsed, whether it's audio or video.

Well depends on what yer wanting. If ya just want to get rid of logos and such ya don't need parsing. I use Decrypter pretty much exclusively, if only because I can't get Smartie to work with my DVD drives (note the plural). I remove logos (and most of end credits) by simply clipping the start and end of the vid stream within DVD2AVI.

The only time I'd use Smart is if a movie has multi-angles, then I run Smart on the already decrypted VOBs (by Decrypter). I also use Smart to find out where all the streams are, cuz Decrypter is slightly braindead in that respect. The old versions of Decrypter used to have this until I guess Lightning UK bloke decided otherwise.

> If i'm correct in this assumption, where's the problem with synch come in? Being that DVDDec. won't take anything away.

There is no problem with sync. If using D2A to downmix to WAV, then the WAV is sync'ed with the vid stream. If AC3, then delay offset is given in the audio file name. The only thing is that the audio may need to faded at the ends, since you're not cutting at the start/end of the streams.

Hmm, it just occurred to me that you are using Gordion. Oh well then all bets are off, since I dunno what the heck that does. May be it only interfaces with Smart & vstrip..

>After all, any parsing to take place takes place during the actual ripping of the VOB's... Right? :)

Not necessarily. You can demux (parse) from VOBs on the DVD or from the hard drive.

>OK, drive issues. That sucks about the factory locking. So, is a law suit for false advertising in the works??? :)

Yes, as soon as you start one.

>Why would they lock the drive like that?

Gee, let me guess.. Why do noobs always ask dumb questions like this?

If you want to use your time wisely (which may be difficult for you hahah), then quit using a slow-ass laptop and get a box with faster drives. My prep time is about 15 mins max, including about 5 mins to rip.

OK so at any point in your lame life, did it ever pop into your head that not everyone is as smart as you??? I'm asking these questions so i can get a clue on what this is all about, not to get smart ass comments.

As far as my laptop goes.. It suits me just fine because i don't spend all my time ripping DVD's.. It would be hard for me to carry around a "box" everywhere I go...

Please do me a favor and go to the assholesrus.com forum and stop wasting my time.....

The only thing worse than being clueless, is being clueless with thin skin. If you don't like smart ass comments, then don't ask dumb questions like "why is my nose brown"? Sure, everybody start being clueless, but you don't have to be stupid as well.

If it suits you just fine then why are you whining for faster rips, then bitch when you get an answer?

Nah, it's sorta relaxing really to read the noobs' moans. Therapeutic, really.. hahah May be a substitute for getting married.. :)

Having an ASPI-layer installed is supposed to increase ripping speed for your DVD-drive. Windows XP doesn't have this by default, so you might try installing one.

Also, having your DVD-drive as master helps for most people.

Don't know how all this would work on a laptop though...

Obviously i missed something somewhere, because no one here is whining or bitching about anything other than your lame response. You started out fine in your reply to me and it was appreciated the information you passed along.. But when you came down to the point of attacking me not having any damn clue of who i am that's where I'm gonna start bitching...
Under what laws that you've written constitute my questions or me for that matter as being stupid???
Unless you have something half way decent to say don't fuckin respond to my questions, because obviously i don't spend all my life in front of computer like you, so i haven't been able to learn everything there is to know.

Actually, I just found out Pioneer 115 DVD-Rom is locked, too.
At first, it was fine to rip using the smartripper, however, i change to master and now the smart ripper couldn't rip the rest of vob files.
Hope, i can make it work after change back to slave. At this time, is still in master.
