Doom10 is a forum for disgruntled and banned Doom9 posters. I've not had conflicts with moderators at Doom9. But, in my observation of forums in general, moderators usually cause more harm than good. They do censor and moderate with bias. They do disrupt the flow discussion by deleting posts and encouraging people to whine about others. They do create hostility and bad feelings. A good moderator is very hesitant to use his power, and uses force only in cases of the most blatant offenses. The most civil forums I know are almost without moderation (you need someone to delete the Viagra spambot posts).

Things did become a bit better in July of 2012 when the forum installation was rebuilt and attention was given to it for a while. But then, as people got busy again, they couldn't give this bulletin board the attention it required to possibly bloom.

And now, some 24 hours ago I was informed that the domain was losing its registration period (and probably the original cheap price). A consensus on the #x264 IRC channel was reached that it was time to move on. I am sorry for those who still used the bulletin board that this comes so suddenly, but I had never been really interested in the domain's details, and thus learned of it "just now" myself. I have backed up the SQL database of this forum for historical purposes, but whether or not it will be available anywhere is a discussion not yet had.

Thank you, everyone, for participating in this experiment, and I hope that the Internet Wayback Machine or Google's cache has enough of this site cached for any historical use. So long, and thanks for all the fish!

I guess I must of missed that email. I've been wondering why Doom10 was down. Too bad another forum closing down, it still had some useful information and I highly doubt the Wayback Machine has it all archive. And Google cache seems to become unavailable after some time. SQL database? Is that like a complete archive?

Usually, the forum "software" is written in some dynamic web language, such as PHP, JSP or ASP, while all the data is stored in an SQL database (MySQL, MariaDB, etc).

So yes, if you have a backup of the forum's complete SQL database, then you probably have all the topics and all the posts that existed on the forum at the moment when the backup was created.

But it's just the "raw" data. It can be challenging to convert this into some form where it can easily be read and searched by users...

(Probably the easiest way would be to setup the exactly same forum software that was used before, re-import the database from the backup and then switch the forum into some "read only" mode)

I tried my best to make the forum active but not many people jumped into the boat. Since I wasn't informed of the shutdown I couldn't do any backups, PM included. I don't like this. I'm not coming back to Doom9 (I'm seen as a rogue around here), so I will move all my support to videohelp in the next week. Thanks to all the Doom10 people.

Well, it was not "completely wiping", really.

It's just that the website/domain went poof and for various reasons, the people running it only found out about the impending Doom too late. They did want to shut it down anyway, but unfortunately there was not enough time left to handle it more gracefully. Really, there was no bad intention, it's more something like bad luck. (Note: I'm not affiliated, going by the public knowledge/witnessing of the deal).

Just figured I'd let you know: I've pissed off mods, I've been wrong, and I don't keep track of who anyone was. You got carried away, it happens; I've posted drunk and in a fightin' mood a few times. Doing it all the time will get you banned, but the mod rules don't mean you're a pariah forever. I'm cool with you, at least.

More on topic: I hope the SQL database can be hosted. There are tools to turn VBB and PHPBB into static sites, even if they never want to revive doom10. The content would be invaluable, and leaving it to Google cache and Wayback is a sad way to see the remains.
