View Full Version : .SFD (an extension of an MPEG file) extraction/converting problem.

Hi everyone, ive been having problems with a .SFD file, ive been trying to extract or convert the file, it is almost literally an MPG file with a different extension, and as times have moved on since this thread, u can take the file into VirtualDub, TMPEG, DGIndex VLC player and even demux it, however while the video stream plays fine, the audio streams on the other hand are a completely different story. i have tried everything to try and get them to work, and i cannot find anything on the net that talks about it or has a solution. Not to forget to mention, when demuxing it through DGIndex, the audio streams come out as .mp1, but with thoers, there is no file extension.

Even with that as a case, i tried playing the files themselves but they are completely soundless despite being a full 4MB. The cloest i got was 'converting' it with SFD2MPG, and that only gave me a WAV file of one of the two audio streams, and i dont even trust it as i might want the other stream instead. The other closest i came to is when i took the file into avidemux, that gave me a totally screechy corrupted bunch of noises that did not resemble anything of what it was suppose to sound like.

I was wondering if anyone may have experienced this or has found a solution, it would be greatly appreciated. Look forward hearing back.

Where do these SFD files come from?

From my Sonic Gems Collection for the PS2, its the Sonic CD section that i am concentrating on and its only the one file im dealing with.

.SFD is MPEG SofDec, which was used on a lot of Sega games from the Dreamcast era onwards.

Indeed, and i am very aware of all of that, however as i have mentioned i managed to demux the file into its raw streams, the video plays fine but the audio files are completely soundless when playing them and that is the problem i am having at the moment. The SFD file contains two audio streams as a reminder, has anyone had similar problem at least may i ask?

has anyone had similar problem at least may i ask? Googling shows that people have had the same problem.

Undead Sega

that is correct, thus which is why i mentioned that no one (or yet from wat ive looked) has mentioned a solution, so i thought it wouldnt be any harm to ask the pros here.

ive quuickly done another demuxing with DGIndex and the audios came out as .mp1's, but once again they are soundles, and when i try taking it into something like TMPEG, i get an error message stating that they are 'Illegal streams.'

This itself makes it harder to Multiplex them together :(

Arent you basically pointing out the application SFD2MPG in that thread? because i mentioned that in my first post and its only selecting one of the streams and its not really extracting, more or less its converting.

Oh, here is one of the streams that was demuxed with DGIndex, feel free to try and make it soundable :D :

EDIT: @setarip_old, that link u provided was the reason why i started this thread in this section :D and that user had a strange problem with the video but not the audio as i am having. Would it help to say that i am using Windows 7 64bit?

If you read his initial post, he stated that converting the AUDIO to WAV format was "easy'...

Undead Sega
20th March 2010, 14:38
well yes he did say that, however my problem is to play the extracted files and as i have mentioned before, the SFD file is dual audio, maybe i would want to extract the streams and changed the order maybe? or have it playable at least, i have a link in my above post of one of the extracted audio streams done by DGIndex, giving it an .mp1 file extention, but there is a good chance that might not be the real file format and probably ADX?

either way, you care to have a go? :D

tools you need:

TMPGEnc-2.525.64.184-EN-Free (30 days trial)

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/audio_video/convert_video/tmpgenc.cfm

adxplayer.zip

http://159.93.167.33/~im/downloads/adxplayer.zip

how to do:

tmpgenc.exe > file > mpeg tools > demultiplex > browse > files of type: all files > browse for opening.sfd

doubleclick audio_stream 0x00 > save as OPENING1.adx (4,922,586)

doubleclick audio_stream 0x01 > save as OPENING2.adx (5,023,746)

adxplayer > control > open > OPENING1.adx > control > stop > save as OPENING1.wav > CLOSE THE ADXPLAYER!!!

adxplayer > control > open > OPENING2.adx > control > stop > save as OPENING2.wav

L.E. for playing (and converting) you can also use:

xmplay_v3.5

http://www.un4seen.com/download.php?xmplay35

with winamp input plugin: in_cube http://support.xmplay.com/file.php?cat_id=3

Cool, i will definately have a go at that, however what if i want to mux them back together into its original file?

ps2 sdk, dreamcast sdk, nintendo sdk...of course you have to be a developer...

Undead Sega

does this refer to when wanting to demux through the method uve posted earlier and actually muxing it back together without exactly modifying anything? as in back to its .SFD file?

b66pak
22nd March 2010, 23:37
you ask for "mux them back" and i answer for that...
_

L.E. the demux method is independent from sdk's an is only based on the tools listed in the previous post...

indeed, wouldnt that be the Dreamcast Movie Creator by any chance?

Also, if i was to rename the audio streams to .ADX and mux them back together, would the game console play the file as it would normally? Also wat filename should theey be given anyways?

FFmpeg plays .sfd perfectly in my experience; you can use any tool based on it to get the audio.
