Converting an HD .mkv to .avi; playing it on a DVD-player?

Hey there!

I've got a question: say i had a 1920x1080 .mkv file that i would like to play on a DVD player, is it possible to do so by converting it to .avi, authoring it and writing it on a dual layer DVD? I mean, do DVD-players even support resolutions higher than SD?

More importantly does your DVD player play AVIs?

I mentioned i would author it later for DVD format. AFAIK many of the soft, like ConvertXtoDVD, do not author .mkv.

Or if you author an ~8GB .avi file to DVD ready format, will it downscale the resolution?

Start from the original Blu-ray or HD-DVD; no sense in re-encoding twice (let alone three times!) to do what you could accomplish by re-encoding once.
