View Full Version : DXVA bugged with ATI Catalyst 10.2?

I'm seeing strange artifacts when decoding h.264 videos through DXVA with ATI Catalyst 10.2 (I'm under Win7 64-bit and I'm using an ATI 5770).

For example, see the snapshot here (taken from the beginning of Bruno, but this issue regards every h.264 video I've tried):

As you can see, there are vertical bars everywhere, they have a regular pattern and are particularly visible in dark areas; during the reproduction, these bars appear and disappear continuosly, they're not still. This issue is present with all h.264 videos I've tried when using DXVA decoding, and disappears when using software decoding (for example, ffdshow-mt), so I think it's a bug in latest catalyst regarding DXVA.

I'm writing here in order to ask if anyone else have noticed this...

Is video selfencoded or original from BluRay?

I have a Ati 5750 and saw last days same vertical bars in some selfencoded (x264) streams and thought I have played a bit too much with settings of encoder or avisynth filters (fft3dgpu).

Do you have the Dynamic Contrast (in the Catalyst Control Center) enabled? I've had similar results that went away disabling the dynamic contrast.

Video is encoded with x264 but I've not applied any filter on original source...and I repeat that with software decoding the picture is perfect.

Yes, it was the dynamic contrast! So, it is bugged in latest Catalyst I suppose...is ATI aware of this bug?

This "problem" is present from the first Catalyst that I've installed (the first when i bought my ATi card) and, if I remember correctly, was 9.6 or similar. I think is the feature that is useless at all, rather than a bug :)

Yes (in fact that's why I didn't know it was the cause of this problem...).

Go to "Avivo Video", then select "All settings" and you'll see "Enable dynamic contrast" among the various options :)

Thanks, it's not there, probably because my card is old, Radeon 2400.

I think the Dynamic Constrast works as intended. I guess that it's like the auto contrast setting in image editing software. It just sets the lowest luma to black and the brightest to white to enhance the contrast. If the image is nearly black it looks strange if some areas are set to white.

I haven't had issues on encodes. But yes, turn off dynamic contract and especially that nasty smoothing in the ati control panel. And ATI's dxva implementation is still pretty bad, only working properly with 4.1 (and has a bug that doesn't let you play videos with more than 11 refs, you have to force it on in ffdshow's dxva). But at least it works decent for most things.

I have more frequent problems on youtube with hardware acceleration tbh, dunno if it's flash issues or ati...

Wow, disabling dynamic contrast fixed it even for me.

The difference is that my PC was giving blue screen if I tried to use DXVA.

lol, I had constant blue screens too running dxva on my old 8800 gts. That card is somewhat notable in only half-working for dxva/cuda apps and I could reliably crash my comp every time I tried opening certain x264 encodes with wmp/dxva :P
