View Full Version : Transcoding of dts produces too much clipping

I have 2 dts files from different movies and their bitrate is 1536kbps. I can't play back movies on my hardware DVD player with these sound files so I have to transcode them to ac3 or at least encode new dts file with lower bitrate. The problem I encounter is that the resulting files have a lot of clipping.

The 1st method I tried was reencoding existing dts files with lower bitrate (768kbps). I used eac3to with arcsoft dts decoder v1.1.0.0 and surcode dts encoder v1.0.23.0 ("eac3to.exe" "input.dts" "output.dts" -768). When I checked the resulting files in adobe audition 3 I noticed there's a lot of clipping. I thought that this clipping effect can be caused by improper import of a dts file by adobe audition so I decided to transcode the source files to wavs.

Again I used arcsoft's dts decoder but this time I saved the output as a single wav file (since arcsoft dts decoder can't output multiple files). After that I split this single 6 channel wav file into 6 mono wavs and checked their waveforms in adobe audition. Clipping was still there. So I assume that the problem might be:

a) original dts files have clipping (but than again how come 2 different movies have such a distorted dts files:
1. District 9 (m-district9-720p.mkv)
2. Rec 2 ([REC].2.2009.1080p.BluRay.X264-HD.Team.mkv)

b) arcsoft dts encoder (v1.1.0.0) can't properly decode dts files.

Sure I could/will try transcoding those dts files into ac3 but need first to overcome this dts clipping issue.

Any of you guys encountered similar problems with 1536kbps dts files?

Any tips, advices, recomendations would be much appreciated.

I don't have a clue what I did after my previous post but after posting I went back to my files and played a bit with them and after that the transcoding to wav ended perfectly, no distortion, no clipping.

I noticed that when I tried to load a dts file into graphedit the Ligos Mpeg Splitter was auomatically loaded as the 1st filter after source file but this filter had no output pins. Also I couldn't manually connect the dts file to an ac3filter. I had warrnings and errors also in Hypercube transcode when tried to load a dts file, they were all pointing to this Ligos splitter. So I decided to unregister Ligos Mpeg Splitter in Gspot. Maybe this did the trick, I don't know.
