Dear all,

We released a new software DVDFab Passkey at http://forum.dvdfab.com/showthread.php?t=3691

It has similar features like AnyDVD HD, but it's free during BETA stage.

Please try it and give us your invaluable feedback, thank you very much!

Best Regards,
Fengtao

Does this free beta version work with ALL known MKBs, through MKB 16?

BTW - Instead of relying on members' knowledge of a competitor's "similar" product, why don't you post here what "DVDFab Passkey" specifically does and doesn't do?

@ "setarip_old"

their website is a phone-call away

DVDFab Passkey is a Windows-based driver that works on-the-fly to unprotect encrypted movie DVDs and Blu-ray discs. All features are free during BETA stage.

Looks like AnyDVD eh???

LOL!!

DVDFab Passkey supports all known AACS up to MKB 16.

DVDFab Passkey supports all known BD+.

The core features are same. For difference between DVDFab and AnyDVD, I remember few:

dvdfab has better jump to main movie / menu feature, since dvdfab uses pathplayer's result.

anydvd has anycdda for audio cd, subpic control, run 3rd app when disc inserted, etc.

Hmm... this could be quite interesting once it reaches fruition. I'm going to have to analyse it and post a tutorial on Adubvideo. Does it come with a built in ripper, or is it better used with something like DVD Decrypter as a front end?

If user want to rip, we suggest to use DVDFab HD Decrypter with DVDFab Passkey.

Whether intentionally or otherwise, Passkey apparently refuses to recognize .ISOs mounted with Virtual Clone Drive. I guess it can only be used with the freeware virtual drive available from dvdidle.

If anyone uses Daemon Tools, perhaps you can see if Passkey recognizes .ISOs mounted with Daemon Tools.

After all this time of monopoly, thanks to almost simultaneous releases by the folks who bring us MakeMKV and those who bring us DVDFab, I for one am pleased that we can now choose between three products that can copy full BluRay discs, in addition to differing multiple capabilities (one click creation of MKVs, streaming, DVD ripping, DVD compression, conversion to mobile formats, etc.)

actually no...every bluray disc it needs to phone home it seems...not just for BD+ or Live

I still think since it is starting at V7 that it will replace DVDFab and those users will be out of luck...like they did for CSS-Region free product. Will have to buy Passkey if want support. Not sure I like that.

DVDFab Passkey and DVDFab are separate products.
DVDFab Passkey (like AnyDVD) is intended for use with thirdy party DVD copying software.

Also, DVDFab 6 has progressed into DVDFab 7 (beta right now) and is available for download.
DVDFab wont be discontinued.

If user want to rip, we suggest to use DVDFab HD Decrypter with DVDFab Passkey.

Well I tried this on a MKB 16 Blu-ray and DVDFab Passkey said it was sucessful in removing AACS, but ripping with DVDFab 6.2.1.8 t did not work all it did was dump an empty directory and claim it was finished after 2 seconds.

I think you should put in a ripping option straight into DVDFab Passkey, like it works with AnyDVD HD (at least that worked on their trial version I tried) much more convenient.

I just want the Blu-ray files on my HD (not ISO), I don't care for DVDFab's transcoding options.

Have you tried the brand new "Backup" function of MakeMKV? (Copies FULL BluRay disc to your hard drive, either fully decrypted or, if you like, still encrypted)

@prOnorama

Hi!

Have you tried the brand new "Backup" function of MakeMKV? (Copies FULL BluRay disc to your hard drive, either fully decrypted or, if you like, still encrypted)

I just tried that (1.5.1 beta), but the Backup function is greyed out all it does is make mkv files, but I want .m2ts files of course plus it's an evaluation copy (30 day trial), or maybe MKB16 is a bitch all previous versions worked to rip with AnyDVD or DVDFab HD

setarip_old
14th March 2010, 04:04
@prOnorama the Backup function is greyed out all it does is make mkv files

You're not using it properly. To "make .M2TS files, of course":

1) Start MakeMKV
2) Load your BluRay disc
3) Select "Open disc" from the "File" dropdown menu
4) When MakeMKV finishes its initial analysis, the "Backup" icon (and the "Backup" selection from the "File" dropdown menu) will no longer be greyed out
5) Select "Backup" (make sure that "Decrypt" has a checkmark next to it)
6) Set your output location and click on the start icon...

BTW - No problem with MKB 16

Passkey is also an evaluation copy...

prOnorama
14th March 2010, 12:13
Eh I'm not a complete idiot of course i checked out all options, anyway this is what I get after your step 4)

http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/8005/santaw.png

This is a Region B (?) Dutch version of "Bad Santa" maybe the problem is it's a localized version but I guess it shouldn't be, it starts rippng in mkv mode (but I don't need that so I aborted it, just to illustrate the copy protection probably isnt the problem)

I just re-checked my procedures - and realized that I gave you the now-outdated workaround for an earlier version (Whoops - old man has egg on face ;>}).

Now, correctly using v.1.5.1, I did the following:

1) Opened MakeMKV v.1.5.1
2) Loaded BluRay disc
3) In just a few seconds, the upper left portion of the MakeMKV window indicated the source drive and the disc "Type", "Label", and "Protection". The mid-left displayed an icon of a BluRay disc with a green arrow pointing to the right, to a hard drive. The lower left displays ONLY "MakeMKV v.1.5.1 beta win(x64-release started" - and the "Backup" icon is ACTIVE (Not greyed out).

I've successfully used this procedure with v.1.51 for seven or eight BluRay discs now, including a couple of the latest releases with MKB16. If this is not how v.1.5.1 works for you, I'd ask if you have, as you should not, either "Passkey" or "AnyDVD" running (foreground or background) at the same time?

(I've checked at the MakeMKV Forum and, other than a couple of unrelated "program won't start at all" problems, there have been no rewports ofr what you've encountered.)

setarip_old
21st March 2010, 03:35
@SamuriHL Why not just copy the files from the BD to your hard drive using Windows explorer? One reason is that MakeMKV (as do, I'm sure, other programs as well) consistently performs that task significantly faster than Windows Explorer...

@fengtao

I'm posting to let you know that, using default settings, although v.7.0.0.8 handled today's Warner BluRay (U.S.) release of "The Blind Side" properly, it failed during the loading process of today's Lionsgate BluRay (U.S.) release of "Brothers" ("Unable to open") - and in doing so, required a warm reboot in order to access the drive containing the BluRay disc.

(On the other hand, MakeMKV handled both without any problems)

BTW - What is the reason that Region code and BDLive! must be set in tandem - either both on or both off?

Peer van Heuen

BTW - What is the reason that Region code and BDLive! must be set in tandem - either both on or both off?

Because after fixing the region code (and therefore necessarily modifying the .JAR files and their signature), BDLive will not work anymore and could result in unexpected behavior.

@Peer van Heuen

Thanks for offering that explanation, but what about the "other half" - Is there also a reason you can't turn off only BD Live! without turning off the Region code?

SamuriHL
24th March 2010, 15:11
That side of the equation should be possible. BD Live removal shouldn't affect the region coding but it all depends on how the BD Live removal is implemented I suppose.

If user want to rip, we suggest to use DVDFab HD Decrypter with DVDFab Passkey.

I have a paid version of DVDFab (DVD, not Bluray) which should technically work as DVDFabDecrypter on BluRays. I have never once gotten it to work since the trial stage expired. (I bought version 5 when it included BD and haven't upgraded on principle, because he made it a separate item.)Passkey works great, but even when it is finished, decrypter doesn't "see" the disc.

What else should I use to rip a BD to my hard drive once it's decrypted, if I want the full disc, not just the main movie?

setarip_old

@mpiper

Your post is confusing.

You seem to be talking about copying/backing up a BluRay disc - and you say:Passkey works great, but even when it is finished, decrypter doesn't "see" the disc.
What else should I use to rip a BD to my hard drive once it's decrypted, if I want the full disc, not just the main movie?

1) What is your definition of "rip"? (My definition is "decrypt and copy to harddrive" and/or burn to disc)

2) Why would you expect your (paid or trial?) version of DVDFab to "see" the decrypted BluRay when you've already stated that it no longer works with BluRays?

3) Have you emailed the publisher to voice your apparent multiple complaints?

On some discs, the region is in a text file. Would it not make sense to change that text file, which I presume is not signed, rather than altering the jars/signatures?

3) Have you emailed the publisher to voice your apparent multiple complaints?

Sorry. Itwas a late night after a very long day. I left out details.

1. The Passkey decrypts the Disc. But it provides no method to move the decrypted files to the harddrive. This is the two step process I call "rip" that results in a decrypted copy on my hard drive. Passkey only decrypts. No where does it state a "copy & paste" version on the hard drive will work. So, my question is how do I copy the files to my hard drive and guarantee these files are now 100% ready to burn?

2. DVDFab Decrypter (the free version) is supposed to only see and copy the 1st generation of copy protected BD discs, or discs with no copy protection. THe difference between free and paid is free only does exact backups. none of the other backup functions work (main movie, split, merge, etc.) The free version is nothing more than an unregistered version of the paid. So when the paid BD backup expired, it reverted to the free version, only seeing 1st gen discs. (This is according to their own customer service, via email.) My problem is, it nevers sees ANY BD discs I place in it. I expected Passkey to fix this, since the disc should now appear as an unencrypted disc.

I was planning to buy the post-beta Passkey, since it would allow the free BD part of DVDFab to backup the Disc. That is all I want from DVDFab, to simply allow me to make 100% backups of the disc. I can then use BD Rebuilder for the rest. But Passkey says it has completed decrypting the disc and DVDFab still show the drive as empty. I can use BD Rebuilder on the passkey-decrypted disc. works perfectly. But I want to be able to put the disc on my hard drive so Rebuilder (or Xvid4PSP) can be used to make copies I can use elsewhere besides my BD player.

So, yes, I have emailed the publisher about the "free" bluray disc not working. Their response was "buy the paid version." But again, I bought DVDFab back when version 5 was an all inclusive program SPECIFICALLY for BD backups. Then, he makes each component paid, and only give me "renewal" pricing on the DVD part. I bought the DVD to Mobile portion (it was a new addition) and now get renewal on it as well. But they expect me to pay full price on an annual subscription for a product I bought when it was a lifetime program. For those of you thinking, "just use that all-inclusive version that you did pay for." I can't. I do the monthly upgrade to cover new discs as they come out. I was already doing that when he switched to the annual subscription model. So I upgraded through several generations before the "subscription" expired. I thought I was grandfathered in, since I had bought prior to the new pricing. When the expired message popped up, I emailed them and was told that I had to purchase the subscription. By that time, I had already deleted the oldest versions of the install program (I only keep 2-3 versions of a program), and my lifetime functionality was gone with one of the deleted versions.

Nope, not bitter. Not at all  But my original question stands: what can I use to rip the unencrypted BD to my hard drive?

Nope, not bitter. Not at all  But my original question stands: what can I use to rip the unencrypted BD to my hard drive?

This question was answered a few posts back. Once the files are decrypted with DVD Passkey, you can use anything you want to copy them from the BD to the hard drive. This includes Windows Explorer's copy and paste, robocopy (or any variation) on the command line, or any program that's capable of making an ISO image from the disc that can be mounted using a program like Virtual CloneDrive or Daemon Tools. Once the files are decrypted, you pretty much can do whatever you want with them.

Yes, it is like that on some discs, I noticed and briefly considered that.
But it's in varying formats and would require addressing specific discs/groups of discs, which I don't feel is a clean approach - I'm guessing it would result in hard to track region code problems.

The way we're handling region codes at the moment is totally generic and will work for every disc.

It may become an option some time, when the authoring tools start settling down and becoming less "today this, tomorrow that".
But still: the only "benefit" would be keeping BDLive intact.
And note that BDLive will in many cases download content that itself will do another region check. That's a total support nightmare, when we start having to figure out whether AnyDVD failed to remove a region code or some online content is causing the trouble. No thanks, really...

Earlier in this thread, you said:actually no...every bluray disc it needs to phone home it seems...not just for BD+ or Live.

I wanted to let you know that this statement appears to be incorrect.

Using a system with no Internet connection, I "turned on" Passkey and successfully made decrypted full disc copies of two original, commercial Blu Ray discs.

I then COMPLETELY EXITED Passkey and proceeded to playback each of the two backups without incident.

Additionally, just for "kicks and giggles", MakeMKV was able to successfully make properly functioning BluRay full disc backups from .ISOs of the Passkey backups, as well as individual .MKVs from each of the .MTS files ;>}

LOL,
how is that relevant once a Blue-ray is decrypted any program can do anything it wants to it.
you can even copy and paste the material off the iso.
or just use 7zip to extract the contents of the iso to your hard-drive you would not need to use makemkv to do that. ;)

after all, Makemkv just copied the contents of the .iso to a folder.

it has nothing to do with the key (VID that you mean).
a decrypted blue-ray is a decrypted blue ray.
I think you are confusing a decrypted iso with an encrypted iso. (even with imgburn or nero with passkey or anydvd disabled)
if you created an iso with encryption enable than makemvk would through a feat.
i have anydvd, and if create a decrypted iso, makemkv has no problem opening the blue-ray. ;)

all I saying is that Passkey decrypts the disk and removed all references to the "key", just like anydvd if you create an iso that is not encrypted ( not protected).

The "key" only comes to play when you produce an iso that is not decrypted. Hence it is called protected iso.

Hope that clears out the confusion

Even when Passkey is no longer a beta version, one could still distribute a "light version" as freeware. This version could remove the DVD and BD Region codes on the fly and perhaps change the disc navigation.

In former times, there was a free program named "DVD Region Killer" available that could remove the DVD Region on the fly, but only if the DVD drive was already region-free, and of course, at that time, Blu-ray did not exist yet.

Therefore, a new free tool that can remove the disc Region on the fly, also with region-locked drives, would be highly appreciated by users who look for a cheap possibility to watch discs from all Regions, so the Passkey light version could be the "DVD Region Killer"'s successor.

However, the DVD Regions 7 and 8 should be added both to Passkey and to DVD Fab. Yes, they are rarely used, but for completeness, practically all programs allowing the modification of the DVD Region code offer them.

Many greetings, :)

Passkey requires Internet connection when a MKB v10 above disc is inserted, if this indicates Passkey does not have a Processing Key or Device Key for MKB v11 or above ?

Does Passkey process HD-DVDs?
Apparently not.
DVDFab Passkey is a Windows-based driver that works on-the-fly to unprotect encrypted movie DVDs and Blu-ray (BDMV/BDAV/AVCREC) discs.
