I downloaded David.Letterman.2009.11.24.720p.HDTV.x264-BAJSKORV and used mkvmerge GUI to cut the 7min segment I needed.
My luck stopped there. I've tried half a dozen programs, as well as editor like Sony Vegas, without luck. I'm trying to convert it to a format that YouTube will accept by preserving the resolution and quality, according to their specifications:

I understand they accept h.264 but they do not support the .mkv container. I bought [spam removed] and tried converting it to a MP4 AVC file by keeping original framerate, 1280x720 resolution, 1500kbps bitrate, and for the audio, downsampling it to 44100 Hz with 2 stereo channels and 128kbps bitrate.
After 22 minutes I have a playable .mp4, the video looks acceptable, but the sound is... well, there's some sound, but it looks like Letterman was grabbed by the testicles, not to mention the screeching.
I tried looking at the guides but the page says it hasn't been updated since 2005, so I'm not sure what to do now.
