Hi

Iam trying to edit my DV footage in premiere pro and i've noticed slight loss of detail while exporting uncompressed.

Original image taken from .MOD file (jvc everio format):

Exported uncompressed footage in premiere pro:

exported using these settings:
File type: Microsoft DV AVI
Compressor: DV PAL

Difference is visible in the roof area. Iam not sure if i lose detail or not, but the frame is clearly not the same. Iam am also not sure if i should take notice of it, i do plan to frame serve(deinterlace) it later on.

isn't the JVC mod file MPEG2 ? so you are re-encoding and they are expected to be compression losses if you use DV

Yest they are.
Do i need an mpeg2 editor to edit and keep the frame? I was under the impression i could do it in premiere:(

The feature you're looking for is "smart rendering" . It means pass through of unedited streams, and only re-rendering of GOP segments that have effects and cuts (other segments are untouched and "pass through").

Premiere Pro doesn't do it for MPEG2 natively. You need to buy a plugin from Mainconcept

Other "smart rendering" applications for MPEG2 would be videoredo, and womble mpeg dvd

i'd go with sony vegas (which at least tries to behave as a proper video editor)

They fixed the plugin, it works now for CS4

They both have their issues pros/cons. Neither is a great "proper" video editor IMO. I use both. (or did you mean as opposed to videoredo/womble) ?
