I did the first part of your suggestion using BDInfo. I will post the results here. Maybe you can help me make some sense of it.

Main Movie - MPEG4 AVC 1080p/23.976 fps/16:9/ High Profile 4.1. Movie works great.

Special feature 1 - MPEG 2 1080p/23.976 fps/16:9/17737 kbps
Special feature 2 - MPEG 2 480i/29.970 fps/4:3/5796 kbps
Special feature 3 - MPEG 2 1080p/23.976 fps/16:9/17749 kbps
These special feature freeze the menu when selected. Subsequently the features don't ever play.

All testing done on original movie rip using AnyDVD (not transcoded).

I don't know if any of this info will help to detemine the problem I have but I appreciate you (or anyone else) looking at it and offering a solution.

And not sure how to do the second part of your suggestion.

Thanks!

If the special features are freezing and the main movie is not, then it may a problem with the MPEG-2. Pehaps you could re-encode them to X264?

Hi Revgen,

Sorry if I seem a little thick. I am not sure what you mean to re-encode to x264.

I thought that is what RB Rebuilder does. Is it possible that you could supply a step by step guide and advising what tools to use. I am fairly knowledgeable when it comes to working with videos and should hopefully follow what you mean with a few more details.

I am not even sure all this work for this video is worth it. I guess I want to prove in my own mind that the problem is not with the Panasonic player but some issue with the software. I can't fix the player (other than replacing it with something more "compatible" with recoded BDs) but there can be something done with the software as jdobbs develops it. I always try to use problems as a learning experience to understand how things work. In this case I believe that there is a solution for 100% playability. Jdobbs did post that all BD25 encodes "should" work on all machines in theory. I am not sure why Panasonic BD-35 is sure a pain. Anyway, enough of my philosophies.

Any help you (or anyone else reading) can provide is appreciated.

Thanks!

One thing to check: Is there a BD-Live update when you run the special features? When you ripped, did you tell AnyDVD to disable BD-Live? If there is BD-Live, you may want to disconnect your player from the network (assuming it is) before running and see if that has an effect. Of course I'm assuming your player supports BD-Live...

I'll see if I can find a copy of "Groundhog Day" and give it a run.

Hey jdobbs,

Thanks for the reply.

No..there is no BD Live update on the special features. I have double checked a couple times. I have removed the SD card and network cable but it had no effect. The Panasonic BD-35 does support BD Live. I look forward to the results of your evaluation.

On a related note, the only other movie I had trouble with is Drag Me to Hell (Region A as full BD 25 - if you have been following my posts). My first try at transcoding the movie, I played in my BD player and it just stopped after displaying the message "Network connection started". I have seen other posts where BD Live has been giving problems I tried again this afternoon. I removed the SD and disconnected the network cable and the BD25 ripped worked perfect. When I play my original, there is a "ticker" that displays on the main menu and is constantly updated through the internet. So there must be something to the BD Live affecting the playability of the rip.

I do have one question - Drag Me To Hell has 2 versions on the disk -Director's cut and theatrical. How can I eliminate the theatrical version but still keep the rest of the disk with menus intact? Can I use some kind of placeholder for the theatrical video?

Thanks again for your time and efforts.

Thanks again for your time and efforts. Most of the time on BD a movie with two versions use the same M2TS files -- with a few additional M2TSs dedicated to the additional segments/changes that are a part of the "Director's Cut". That means that if you removed them you'd probably only gain a very slight amount of space -- while increasing the risk of issues dramatically. So it's generally better to just leave it.

Hi jdobbs,

In the case of Drag Me To Hell, there is two complete versions of the movie on the disk each with their own M2TS stream. For an experiment, I just deleted one of them. The size of disk went from like 46 gig down to 27 gig. Transcoded to fit onto 25 gig BD and the director's cut part worked perfectly.

Cool,eh! (Ya...I am Canadian!).

Hey jdobbs, In case you are still following my thread, I just wanted to let you know that I finally have a 100% BD25 working copy of Groundhog Day.

Now I am not sure if it is the new version 0.32.08 but what I did this last time was only encode the movie at full disk mode. I set the INI setting MIN_M2TS_SIZE=1400 so that it did not shrink any of the special feature videos.

As a result, the whole disk works fine now.

I guess perseverance pays off. It would be nice to know why the transcoded special features did not work off the menu or why the menu won't work when transcoded as well.

Oh well, I may never know but I a glad it is working now.

Later!

Well... that's not really a solution. It's just a work-around and it could be taking a lot of bitrate away from the feature. I picked up "Groundhog Day" today (finally) and also "Drag Me To Hell". I'll run them through tonight for BD-25 and give it a test tomorrow.

Any special settings?

Yep...I hear what your saying about the bitrate issue. The disk was only 29 gig in size and the extras weren't real big. But I was just happy to "solve" a problem.

And no...I did not use any special setting other than not processing the secondary video feature because it had DTS Express audio.

Let me know what you find. My prediction is that it will work fine for you and that the issue is more with the Panasonic BD-35 player.

Appreciate the assistance.

Later!
