View Full Version : Is SPDIF output stream possible thru Line Out output?

I was wondering if, seeing that the SPDIF output seems pretty much like a mono RCA or 3.5 jack output (not considering optical SPDIF), was it possible to actually output an SPDIF signal thru a Line Out output, let's say an AC3 stream wrapped inside an SPDIF and stored as a PCM file.
A stream as such would actually be noise when played by any standard player, but would it be "decodable" by a receiver if I were to route the Line Out output of the playing device (i.e. a notebook) into the SPDIF input on the receiver?
Is any of this possible (at least theoretically) or am I "pissing out of the jar" regarding the similarities between an RCA/3.5 SPDIF output and a conventional Line Out RCA/3.5 output?

Nope, the analog circuits attached to Line Out can't support digital signal sended by SPDIF (think in square waves with frecuencies more than 1 MHz).
Of course don't exist a method to send digital signal trougth Line Out, first must go to the Digital/Analog converter and after that you can't recover the original digital signal exactly.

i never used SPDIF before and don't know anything about how to use. :o
my receiver/decoder have 2 opticals and 1 coaxial inputs.
(and 'dozen' in/out analogs stereo and 5.1)
the mother board MCP6P M2+ have 5.1 analogs and SPDIF outputs.
the SPDIF pins assignments are:
1= +5v
2= SPDIF_out
3= ground
can i use the SPDIF out from my mother board to my receiver and get 5.1 ?
( if yes please tell me how to use) :confused:

You need buy this accessory (or equivalent)
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/accessory/index.php :
S/PDIF Cable
Part NO. :
27-K12-033040R5
And the optical cable (toslink) to connect to the receiver.

This connector (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6f/Speaker_din_male_and_female.jpg) was used to connect the loudspeakers some years ago. Now it's used by some lamps to transfer 12V. You wouldn't connect the loudspeakers to the trafo, even if the connectors match eachother, would you?
Now, the voltage corresponds, analog audio 500mV, S/P-DIF again 500mV.
Analog audio, some 30kHz, S/P-DIF some 3000kHz. Oooops!
Impedance, audio output more than 600Ohm (2Kohm typically), S/P-DIF 75ohm. Ooops!
If you can instruct your audio interface to receive an analog stream of digital coded data (like there was the Commodore, Spectrum etc. tape interface) and to output it through the analog RCA connector, you're done :rolleyes:

Understood :thanks:

After this very big earthquake (my parents, wife and I are fine, thanks God) I can read the forum again...
Last month I bought a 5.1 decoder (AC3, DTS) and I couldn't connect the PC to it, because the PC didn't have an output. But it does have a bracket like the one described in post 3, so I made a coaxial connector with a female RCA and an old Audio CD cable which I cut to adapt it. The tests show that it works well, and the cost of US$2 shows that it's very cheap!

oh boy, so simple, so great. :cool:
(what a shame, i was technician and don't knew that. :rolleyes: )
thank you and all others that help.
