limits with m2ts?

I am trying to convert a video to be burned to blu-ray. Using AVC in Sony Vegas. Challenge is when I pick m2ts as the container it only allows to select 1440x and 1920x as the resolutions. I can't pick 720x or 1280x anymore. Is there a limit to the m2ts format? One of the reasons for using this is so I know the final size and it won't be touched by the video editing software. My content is basically standard def stuff that I am consolidating in Blu-Ray (please no why are you doing this responses), so see no value in the higher resolutions for this.

1) export your project to lossless .avi (lossless codec http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143624)
2) import avi in ripbot264 and select AVCHD format

remember x264 encoder will give you alot better quality than codec bultin vegas!

I think what's driving me nuts on this though is unless the video is stored in an m2ts container, all the software I use to create menus and chapter breaks keeps wanting to re-encode the video. Like if I have a 280MB M2TS file it gets added to the project at like 312MB. No big deal. If I do the same but it's encoded as a HD WMV let's say, the software comes back and uses 1300MB when added to the project which I can only assume that it's decided to re-encode it. Tried a number of programs and they all do the same thing.

Edit: Video is 1280x720-30p by the way that I'm encoding in.
