Combine 4:3 and 16:9 video in one Matroska video stream

I have noticed that if I encode video segments using x264 with the same settings, some as 4:3 aspect and some with 16:9 aspect. I can append the raw video streams using mkvmerge without receiving any errors.

The resulting mkv will play on my standalone blu ray player and each segment of the stream displays in its correct aspect ratio.

I am very impressed with this feature.

Its an LG BD370 blu ray player. Source video is pal standard definition dvds. mkvs played from usb flash drive on the player.
