I am not sure if I am in the correct section if not please send me to where I should be.

I have converted many of my DVDs to avi with DVDFab and found the sound through my amp to be crap to say the least.

Obviously it is the program that I am using.

What do you recommend.

Cheers

Obviously it is the program that I am using.
It's not the program, it's the audio you're selecting, or the program auto-selecting a compressed audio format in too low of a bitrate to maintain quality.

If you're talking about 5.1 sound, the only thing that works for me to play 5.1 through 5.1 speakers in stand-alone video files is mplayer while using the '-channels 6' option. I don't use avi, I use mkv. I have no idea about vlc, wmp, mpc or any of that but I never had luck with those. Seems to be that windows was midly encumbered with having the only software capable of true 5.1 being drm dvd players, not file players.

Maybe Jriver downconverts your audio to 2 channels then send it to the amplifier.

With so many details you gave us it's no wonder we know exactly your problem

1. definition of crap
2. original audio format
3. amplifier indications
