View Full Version : CPU Difference on Encoding Speed

I've got a Q8200 based PC with 6GB running Vista 64-bit. Ripbot64 takes on average 8-10 hours to encode most main movies. Typically get somewhere around 4.5 fps +/- 1 fps encoding at cRF=18 on 1080P high-def content.

I am eyeballing a Q9550 CPU replacement. It gets a 32% higher PassMark score:

Does that mean essentially I'll probably get roughly around 32% higher encoding speed? If so, it really doesn't seem like spending the money on the CPU is really worth only saving a couple of hours per encode. Once I get through my BD collection, I won't have to encode so often. But its this initial batch of encoding that is driving me nuts.

Of course the other recommendation could be to just go spend $150 for another 2TB drive and just use MakeMKV and don't re-encode the video but then I'll need to buy another or bigger enclosure. Then I'll probably say why not get two more 2TB drives and go RAID-5. Then things start to get expensive.

The q9550 runs a 333mhz bus, you can safely pump it to 400mhz (or even more), which would make it a 25 percent overclock. Taking this overclock in to account, it would make roughly a 65 percent improvement over your current setup.
