I am pretty sure x264 supports a maximum of 128 threads, but the more threads you use (--threads) the quality will decrease a little tiny bit. I have found using the default settings 2passes, but with merange 32, b-adapt Optima, me umh, subme 8, Level 4.1 and High Profile with a bitrate of 2000KB/s gives pretty good quality. It is so good that you really can't notice the difference between the source and your encode. I have done a little test on a 720p movie clip. And I am currently doing a full movie encode. The first pass was an average of 40fps, and the second pass right now is at an average of 15fps. The settings are exactly the same for both passes. My specs are, i3 540 (3.067Ghz dual core, hyperthreading so it stimulates 4 cores.) 6GB of PC3 - 10600
