New anti-virus needed.

Hi!
I want new good anti virus software now. Nowadays I use Kaspersky anti-virus. But due to this anti virus my computer become very slow. So I do not work faster on my computer. I want some advice which anti-virus is good for my computer and which one does not reduce speed of computer. If anyone has information please share here.

Kaspersky is very buggy lately. It for example causes problems with Media Player Classic.

I can only recommend MSE (http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/) or AntiVir (http://www.free-av.de/en/index.html). Or both of them in parallel :)

Both are pretty lightweight, they offer a clean interface and they won't install tons of useless crap. Also in my experience they have an acceptable "false positive" rate.

Most of the "false positive" reports that I receive from users are caused by Kaspersky or Symantec. I once tried NOD32 and it was horribly slow :rolleyes:

This is what some people would call the "Holy Grail", I hope you can find it but suspect that you will not.

Have to agree with LoRd_MuldeR, Avira is quite good, lightweight with good detection rate and not so many
false positives. (Cant comment on MSE).
Avast, pretty much same as Avira, not much between them, they probably constitute the better
(nearly said a BAD word) pay for (or free) AV scanners available.

By the way, Avira does a free Off-Line AV scanner that can be burnt on CD/DVD or run from USB stick, and I think it deals
with eg RootKit infections as it runs outside of windows (actually runs under a small Linux distro).

Judging purely by On-Demand scanning, A-Squared might be one of the fastest, and has perhaps the greatest detection
rate but also suffers from quite a lot of false +ve's, it is also not one I would want to be updating every
day as the DB is about 70MB full download every time. I keep this one updated about once per month, purely
for on-demand scanning.

Zone Alarm v8, is fast, not quite that good on detection rate, but you need a speedy machine to run it.
When I did use ZA, I actually dropped back to v6 for use on my number 2 machine as this took a lot less CPU.

I personally use Comodo Internet Security, Free (without 24/7 support). It's one of the fastest, near the top as
far as detections are concerned, but does have a few false +ve's which they fix when reported.
The Firewall and HIPS, (Host intrusion protection System) are both good and not too pestering.
When I am rendering, I quite often switch off both AV and HIPS, (NOT THE FIREWALL, just in case I forget to switch
em back on) but dont really notice any difference, there used to be a considerable difference when I used ZA.
I currently use Comodo on my number 2 machine (900MHz PIII), and it does have considerable impact upon it.
So, I usually run it without AV or internet connection. I dont so much mind this machine being at risk,
I can reinstall a clean completely setup and configured machine in less than 10 minutes.

WinPatrol is also good to have on you machine, it wakes up every 30 or so seconds and checks if anything has been
altered on your machine, eg new auto-run programs added. Very light on CPU.
This program is likely to run just fine with any other security program and is considered a MUST in my kennel.

If your every likely to go to dodgy sites, then you should always use FireFox v3.5 or later, much much safer than ie.
MS, tends to spend an inordinate amount of time inventing new web technologies that require new security software
to stop em being used.

If you suspect that you are infected, try uploading suspect files to:-

For immediate scanning with many AV scanners. :)

There's all kinds of hype about pay versus free, bloated versus lean, constant updates versus rarer ones, and so on. My advice is to try one of the free ones such as AVAST!, AVG Free, Antiver, or the like. Download and install one, keep it updated, and run it with a thorough check about once a week. That'll do you fine. Of course, follow common sense rules too, such as not opening suspicious attachments or downloads, etc. Good luck.

I would recommend MSE. It is lite, free, and it does the job. I have been using it since the beta and it works on XP SP2+, Vista, and Win7. Hope this helps.
