View Full Version : How to backup a blu-ray ?

Ok, I'm good with DVDs, but Blu-ray is new to me. So be gentle.

I just bought a player and a couple of cartoons for the kids a couple of days ago. I've desperately been trying to create a copy of the discs ever since.

What I did was:
Get anyDVD HD to decrypt the files to harddrive
Get dvdfab to load the ripped files and make a "movie only" copy that fits a DB-25
Burned the result with Burn Aware

The resulting m2ts file works fine (so presumably it's decrypted), and I can even convert it to DVD (albeit without subs), so I'm not totally without a backup, but I WOULD like to keep the high quality seeing as how I forked over the extra cash for that feature.
My problem is that playing the disk on an LG-360 or my blu-ray burner doesn't seem to work. The burner says no disc loaded, and the standalone player just returns to the players main menu screen.

What am I doing wrong ? I can't find any indication that other steps should be performed, or that specific files need to be written to the disc(s). Is that just something that everyone knows and aren't telling ?

Use AnyDVD HD to rip it to your harddrive. Then use BDRebuilder (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143716). You should also have a look at the compatible player list (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=144674) in case you want to save some money and burn the movie only on a DVD9 (1080p) or DVD5 (720p). Burn the result with ImgBurn (http://imgburn.com/).
There is a proper manual in the BDRebuilder thread.

Hi!Get anyDVD HD to decrypt the files to harddrive
Get dvdfab to load the ripped files and make a "movie only" copy that fits a DB-25Since you appear to have a BluRay-activated version of DVDFab, there's no need to use AnyDVD to decrypt your BluRay discs or files, as DVDFab will do that (And relying solely on DVDFab may avoid any potential conflicts between the two programs)...

IIRC DVDFab shows a message telling to shutdown AnyDVD.

Unfortunately, I cant seem to get DVDfab to actually read the BD disc, which is why I'm getting anyDVD to decrypt it. DVDfab, however, has no problems reading the directory I rip to with anyDVD.

I'll try burning the result with img burn, and see if that helps.

And for the record, yes if anyDVD is still running while I engage DVDfab, it tells me I'm a freak that should die or learn to use a computer (or something to that effect)

Ok, I've just tried burning the DVDFab result with imgburn. Same result. Disc unreadable.
I guess I'll have to take the slow option of BD-rebuilder and see if that works. Presumably that means DVDfab isn't so fab when it comes to HD. I'll find out in about 20-30 hours.
