In my last test, x264 Baseline beat Xvid. But remember, x264 as an encoder is much more advanced than Xvid in many ways (psy-wise and otherwise), so that's not wholly surprising. I suspect in the general case H.264 Baseline is still a bit better, but that the gap is not too large.

did you turn ASP stuff on, like B frames, quarter pel MC for xvid ?

qpel MC doesn't help much in Xvid, except maybe on anime, due to its horrendous design.

XviD, DivX, NeroDigital ASP... is only an option, if you have compatible devices for ASP but no AVC devices.

Some test encodes by myself showed me, that I need around 15% more bitrate for ASP than for AVC baseline to get (subjectiv) same picture quality (XviD allways seemed to be a bit blurrier than AVC)
