Which application do I need to install to use the ac3 decoder?
I hate installing needless applications

Do you want to use an AC3 decoder inside Nero or do you want to use Nero's AC3 decoder in some other application?
In the latter case there are plenty of alternatives: If you need a AC3 decoder filter for DirectShow, simply use FFdshow or AC3 Filter. If you need a CLI decoder, use ValibDec from AC3 Filter Tools.

Sorry I have a way of explaining thing that leave an average person confused. I meant the different applications within Nero 7 e.g. smart start, home
I just started using “anotherEAC3to gui” and it has been great. Then I started tweaking it. I got Archsoft’s dts decoder to work but have been unable to get Nero 7’s ac3 decoder to work. I bought the dvd-video multichannel plugin but that has not worked.

I wouldn't worry too much about using the nero7 decoder over libavcodec's (the default in eac3to). Sure, libavcodec isn't Dolby certified, but it's certainly good enough!! I use it live in production every single day with no issues. The MP2 decoder still has occasional clipping problems AFAIK..
Do you have specific issues with lavc inside eac3to?
