View Full Version : Creating SVCDs in Windows 7 x64

UPDATE: Possibly solved. I'm using Mplex from MJpegTools (via command line, no GUI) to mux the elementary streams into a .mpg file. Thanks to The Scientist for pointing me to VCDGear (http://www.vcdgear.com/download.html), which SEEMS to handle turning a muxed mpeg into an SVCD bin/cue (I need to test in a set-top player to make sure it's fully compatible).

So I've just run into a wall. A very odd wall. Honestly I wouldn't have expected this to be an issue but it is. I can't seem to find any SVCD muxing utilities which work in Windows 7, free or trial ones at least. Everything seems to crash or not work right for the purposes of SVCDs.

I do have an old laptop running XP, but I'd rather find some solution so I can do this on my main computer. Does anybody have any advice?

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot, I'm trying to do this FOR FREE. I don't want to pay money to make SVCDs when I know of four separate free programs that can do it, but just won't work on Windows 7.

Okay, nevermind, I managed to get mplex to work for me. Now I can't find anything to BURN SVCDs, or to make the appropriate image, all for really weird reasons. (VCDImager, for example, says it can't find Windows Media Player)

I did this long time ago with Nero.

I did this long time ago with Nero. Not free. At least, as far as I can tell the free version of Nero doesn't have the necessary tools. If there's some way it can do that though, dear lord PLEASE tell me.

I'm trying to do this without pirating anything, basically. I'm not going to shell out $70 just to make (S)VCDs on my main computer.

This will take vcd|svcd mpg files and create vcd|svcd images of various types. It's free and I've just tried it on my WIndows 7 and all is fine.

VCDGear HERE (http://www.vcdgear.com/download.html)

There never were a free Nero, and it will never be!

Virtually every DVD/CD-recorder came with this piece of software.

This. Win. THANK YOU.

I just made an image with it, but my house lacks an oh-so-picky set-top unit to test with. I'll have to wait until next Tuesday to see if an SVCD made with VCDGear and burned with ImgBurn works just as dandy as the ones made with the Trial version of Nero I'm currently using.

(VCDImager, for example, says it can't find Windows Media Player)

Are you sure you didn't mean something different from VCDImager?
AFAIK, VCDImager wouldn't need to have anything to do with Windows Media Player...

Sorry, you're right, it was VCDEasy that was saying it needed Windows Media Player. VCDImager has peculiar errors when I run it and winds up producing a 0-byte file.

Also, FYI the image I made with VCDGear worked just fine in a set-top box. I believe that's what I'll be using from now on.
