Tmpgenc? Why the heck no AC3 5.1?

I've seen the power of this application and it has great potential, regardless if it costs money. And with spursengine cards along with CUDA support, you can get some crazy encoding times.

Someone who is building a strictly HTPC for recording and encoding video could use something like this to great effect.

That being said, why would a program like Tmpgenc not support encoding or at least stream copy of AC3 and encoding to MKV?

MKV is quickly becoming the defacto standard for h.264 video files, especially with its durability as a video container. Wonder if they have it out for it.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me?

Dolby licensing is slow, painful, and hideously expensive. Trust me. Getting full AC3 / EC3 licensing for my company's hardware and software was extremely irritating.

Understandably so, however Tmpgenc has been around for a long time.


Also, how do programs like megui get to use it for free?

Now that I found out that Tmpgenc supports the input of an Avisynth profile, I might look into buying the Leadtek Winfast Pcvx1100 spursengine card bundled with Tmpgenc.

I can use avisynth to make my cuts, load into Tmpgenc, and then just take the mp4, and mux it along with the cut audio into MKV. may be a few extra steps, but if it saves twice as much time for each file, then it just might be worth it.
