I have been successfully ripping DVD's and creating VCD's for a month or so with little problems. One morning I went to check the status of the encoding that I was doing overnight using TMPG. I found the blue screen notifying me that the system had become unstable. After unsuccessfully attempting to CTL-ALT-DEL I had to hard reboot the machine when it came back up I had the message "No operating system found". I determined that the BIOS settings were correct and I then used FDISK and determined that the entire hard drive was lost and that although the hard disk was recognized no usable partition could . I figured that I had become the victim of a virus which was not surprising considering the amount of time since my last virus scan update. I fully restored the computer including a new copy of Norton System Works with updated virus scan. I did a thorough scan of the hard drive for errors and none were found. I though I was out of the woods until a couple of nights later while running Smartripper the same thing happened. The system became unstable and the hard drive was wiped clean. I am trying to determine if my problem is unique or if others have encountered similar problems. Are there any known viruses with results like those described associated with the download of programs described in this site? I am currently running Window's 98 and am thinking about upgrading to XP or 2000 but I am afraid that the problems I am having may be more than simply OS related. Does anyone have any thoughts?
