Ripped dvd fills half the screen

Occasionally, (rarely, actually), when I've burnt a movie, this time it happens to be 'Enemy of the state', my purchased dvd plays ok, 16/9 fills the screen, but ripped copy fills about 2/3 of the screen in hdmi input [phillips]. I need to change to comp. input (to tv, no zooming in hi def input [olivea]) so as to 'zoom' the pic to fill the screen. (Actually I put the disk in a different player [liteon] with comp. connections, the ripped disk works fine, zoomed in.) What gives?? Anybody?? (I hope I've posted in the right place!)

Therefore, logic dictates th eproblem lies with the hardware...
