Hi,
With which tool can i add an aac sound file with mp4 extension in an avi container [ =not in to mkv container ( its already possible with mkvtollnix) ] ? Because VDMod, Nandub and Avi-Mux is useless for this process..

Thanx for advance..

The tools you mention as "useless" are probably designed that way as to give you a hint that AAC audio is not supported in AVI container. Convert your sound file first to some AVI supported format, like MP3 or AC3 and remux afterwards.

It's possible that AAC audio files with .aac ext to muxing into avi container with AVI-MUX

Convert your sound file first to some AVI supported format, like MP3 or AC3 and remux afterwards.

I've already converted an AC3 file to mp4 file to reduce the filesize.

So far, that cannot be a one-step process. First you would have to convert your MP4 to an MKV/MKA, then use Avi-Mux GUI for copying the AAC audio into an AVI file.

That won't work, because Avi-Mux GUI does not allow avi outpu when inputting aac-in-mkv. He needs to demux the sound to a raw aac file.

So, you mean that, if I drag both an AVI-compatible video stream and an AVI-compatible audio stream onto the AVI-Mux 1.17.8 window, this latter will refuse to output an AVI file, only because the audio source is an MKA file?
I'd better re-install Windows XP on my PC A.S.A.P. and verify it with my own two eyes.

Yes. It's kinda awkward but that's the way it works. Don't ask me why. The only thing I remember that works is xvid(vfw)-in-mkv -> avi, but only without audio.

Maybe the OP should explain to all of us why does he need to have AAC audio in AVI container? I guess that all media players out there (including PC) support the playback of MP4/MKV with AAC audio.
On the other hand I do not expect any older device which supports AVI (with MPEG4 ASP only) to support AAC audio either. That's my experience with media players but I might be wrong...

Thanx for advance..Unfotunately aac is not supported in the *.avi container. You have nothing to do with aac, it should be compressed to mp3 or something.

Is that important ? I asked a question. The answer could be, Yes, you can with ... blah, blah, blah or No, you can't because ... blah, blah, blah (e.g. aac is not supported in the *.avi container )

Thanx for replies..

Unfotunately aac is not supported in the *.avi container.

Alexander Noe, the creator of AVI-Mux GUI, doesn't think so. ;)

one can read:

There is a value in the stream headers, called dwSampleSize, which is 0 in order to trigger VBR stream seeking. This is officially documented in the MSDN and not a hack, bug or whatever. The way MP3-VBR and AAC are stored in AVI are specified and completely compliant with the AVI file specification.

and:
AAC in AVI does not work

This works beginning with AVI-Mux GUI 1.15.5 (1.15.4 had a bug with 5.1 AAC files). Those files play fine with Microsofts's AVI splitter as well as with Gabest's AVI splitter, neither of which has any special support for this. The used technique to store VBR in AVI is the same as with MP3. There are a lot of MP4 trolls, saying things like "you should not put AAC into AVI, it is a bad idea, MP4 is better for this, MP4 is more modern blah blah". Forget this nonsense, AAC in AVI is compliant to the AVI file specification.

when is no time for a proper h264 encode i use xvid (constant quality 2) + aac in .avi (muxed with the last AVI-Mux GUI)...and it is working great (i am using a mplayer based software: XBMC)...

This is better then x264 crf 17 preset fast?

I understand that you can put aac in an avi but I don't understand why you would want to. From my experience if a device supports aac it supports mp4 and the mp4 has always been smaller than the avi. Most of the applications that use avi and do not support mp4 do not like the vbr mp3 or aac in avi technique. From what I can tell it is more likely that future devices will support H.264+aac in mp4 then H.264+aac in avi.

in terms of quality: no...

my PC is slow, so somethimes i don't have time for an overnight encoding using h264...so instead of h264+aac in .mp4 or .mkv i go with xvid+aac in .avi (my player supports it and aac is better that mp3 and ac3 at the same size!!!) sacrificing a little quality for speed...of course the standard is xvid+mp3 (or .ac3) in .avi...

Isn't x264 better quality per speed though? How about preset faster if fast is still slower then xvid? ;)

Does your device support xvid+aac in mp4?

yes it is...as i said i have a slow PC and sometimes xvid fits my needs better...

Does your device support xvid+aac in mp4?

XBMC is an mplayer based software...so it is handle .avi flawless...not so good with .mp4 (navigation problems!)
