Hello,
Not too much activity here but this is a hardware question.
Does anyone know if S-VHS (or Hi8) VCR's store chroma separately? I was reading about color under modulation, which seems to be just composite with a different color carrier (not 3.57MHz). Therefore it seems that chroma is not truly separate. Is there less dot crawl/rainbow effects through the s-video output than the composite one?
Does anyone have a sample of pure s-video recorded video from Hi8 or S-VHS?
Thanks

chroma is always separated even in VHS-like systems - recorded source can be not chroma separated ie CVBS

You're mixing up things.

First of all - nobody can provide you a sample of pure S-VHS, because it's analog. The capture would change the way the signal looks like.

Yes, the colour and the luma are separately stored, this allowed not only the compatibility of BW TVs with the colour system, but also that of BW signals on tape. One just ignore the colour info and that's it.

Secondly, dot crawl and other issues are composite signal issues. As long as one has 1 cable to provide all that info, interferences would occur. Yes, it's better to have Y/C (S-Video) cables, but rememeber, all the gear in the chain should be compatible (video 1 - cable - video 2), it's not enough that they have Y/C inputs if they connect them internaly by the means of a capacitor. I don't know any VHS gear that has Y/C input/output, even among the profi ones. So, to use Y/C you need a S-VHS VCR.

Finally, it's not hardware, it's capture (for this forum).
