View Full Version : Image problem on capture from Hi8 camera

Hi, everybody !
I have a Sony CCD-TRV46E analog Hi8 video camera with mono channel sound,a Leadtek PxPVR2200 TV-tuner and a PC with OS Windows7 32bit.
I'm trying to capture a few Hi8 cassetes and convert them to DVD's.
I've made all the connections,thru a AV cable and a miniDIN 9 pin cable, between the camera and the TV-tuner,installed VirtualDub 1.9.8. and iuVCS.
Made the next settings in VirtualDub:
Video
Overlay->checked
Noise Reduction->Enabled
Vertical Reduction->None
Compression->ffdshow->HUFYUV
Custom Format->720x576->YUY2(YUV 4:2:2 interleaved)
Audio
Enable audio capture
Enable audio playback
Compression->No compression(PCM)

I begun to capture a small file.After playback,I remarked that the sound was acceptable(it's mono),but the image was flickering,from time to time and very annoying ,by the way.

Tried all kind of filters,in virtualDub,same result;then I've tried to capture with iuVCS,because I've read that the DirectShow drivers are better to use,in my case,but nothing changed...the same result.
I have to say,that these distorsions of the image,doesn't appear when I playback the tapes on
my camera and view them on a TV.
These appear only, in the capture window of VirtualDub(or iuVCS)and in the capture file.

Every advice is very helpfull !

On your video I see large time base errors on both dimensions, vertical and horizontal.
Leadteak tuners based on Conexant chipsets are very sensitive to time base errors. Moreover, the errors are enlarged. You have three solutions:
1. use any other tuner (with Philips chipset or ATI) wich are less sensitive to tbc errors
2. put external TBC (time base corrector) between the camera and your tuner will stabilize / correct time base errors.
3. use another camcorder with built-TBC feature

The built-in TBC is not likely to fix anything. Seeing how the overscan remains intact.

To me, it looks more like false anti-copy detection by the capture card. For that, you'd want an external TBC to fix it.

More on TBCs can be found at http://www.digitalfaq.com/forum/showthread.php/alternative-avt-8710-1853.html in the 3rd post. Not all TBCs are the same.

Changing tuners won't necessarily help, either. False macrovision detection is found on almost all capture cards and DVD recorders.

If the problem came and went, then that most certainly sounds like false detection.

First, I see that your card has an MPEG encoder (CX23416) on-board. From its datasheet it's not really clear if you can disable it or how can you influence the "optimisation" parameters it has.
Secondly, under the radiator it should be another customizable CX23885-13Z, which integrates 2 video lines (2 digital, 2 analog or 1a+1d) and audio. Again you have there the I2C protocol for customising the parameters (audio+video).

So, leave the 3rd party tools away, and use the drivers and the software it came with the card. They should be optimised for the hardware.

The images I've seen looks to me like a synch problem. The card looses the synch to the tape and drops a frame in a nasty way (thank the "optimisation" circuits, dear!), it's not a copy protection. My first idea was that the tape does not run uniformly, so FF und REW at least once. If it doesn't go away, then it's on the tape (it ran so during the filming) and you can't do anything else than putting a real good TBC (at least fullframe, if not more). Try another player, try to put the tape in another case.
Because your TV is much less insensitive than a recording device. They are made so.
